Voters back governor (Schwarzenegger, CA), poll shows
Mercury News ^ | Aug. 31, 2006 | Steve Geissinger

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads Democratic challenger Phil Angelides by 13 points, and voters -- though hit with sticker shock -- are backing four of five multibillion-dollar public works bonds, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The Public Policy Institute of California survey shows likely voters favor the Republican governor over the Democrat 45 percent to 32 percent. Preferences have changed little since July, when the poll indicated the governor was leading 43 percent to 30 percent.

The governor's approval rating among likely voters also is up by eight points since May, with 50 percent of voters approving and 42 percent disapproving of the job he's doing.

Poll director Mark Baldassare said the success of the governor's campaign so far is reflected in "independents choosing Schwarzenegger over Angelides by a wide margin -- 42 percent to 23 percent." The trend is most noticeable in Democrat strongholds.

This is from 2001 and they have continued to get worse since.

I couldn't find a recent assessment.

California Tops the List of Worst Roads in the Nation

http://www.allstays.com/Features/CaliforniaWorstRoads.htm

Dec. 27, 2001--California's rutted, cracked and neglected roads now rank at the bottom of all 50 states in roadway quality and per capita dollars being spent to improve them, according to a new study from Transportation California.

Last year the state's roads were third worst in the nation. With 37 percent of 168,000 miles of state and local roads rated poor, the state has fallen to dead last on the list, according to The Road Information Program, which prepared the study. Other states in the bottom five were Louisiana, 27 percent; Massachusetts, 25 percent; and New Jersey and Missouri, 21 percent.

``A generation of underinvestment in California's streets, highways, overpasses and bridges has resulted in a shameful deterioration of what once was a showcase transportation network,'' said Larry Fisher, executive director of Transportation California, the state's leading transportation advocacy and public education organization.

And you think the Democrats have an interest in the future of the automobile, huh? That's not where the money will go. Certainly not towards building new freeways!

Five out of the ten worst metropolitan areas ranked for road conditions are in CA. This is from 2005:

"The ten urban regions with at least 500,000 people, which includes the city and its surrounding suburbs, with the greatest share of major roads and highways with pavements that are in substandard condition and provide a
rough ride are: Kansas City – 71%, San Jose – 67%, St. Louis – 66%, Los Angeles – 64%, San Francisco-Oakland – 60%, San Diego – 58%, New Orleans – 55%, Boston – 49%, Sacramento – 49% and Oklahoma City –47%."

I really suggest you read these bond measures before posting this nonsense. Your "ROADS" include such sound "infrastructure" investment as retrofitting buses to fight global warming and intercity rail projects including urban rail operators, bus operators, waterborne transit operators, etc. A huge chunk goes to the Ports, not Roads. Another chunk goes to local districts that should be using their own revenues to fund local projects--not state bonds. Other than highway 99, don't expect to see much highway improvement. Not to worry, you can just jump on the Red-line.

The Democrats like their Socialist cousins back in Soviet Eastern Europe love public transport. The automobile is an invention of the evil capitalist individualists of the West.

With the Dem Legislature, you don't have a choice, the only way to get the roads fixed, was to agree to spend money on other stuff as well. It's either that or not fix the roads at all, which, after so many years of neglect, is not an option.

It's all because of the DEMOCRATS, yet you are trying to blame everything on Arnold, helping to get MORE Democrats elected.

Don't you think you are a bit inconsistent?

Do remember, about 50% of Massachusetts land area falls in what is described as "Metropolitan Boston".

Actually, after driving up to Boston this summer, I've decided that the single WORST road in the nation is the Jersey turnpike. They should have paid ME a toll because I had to subject my car to that!

MassPike was wonderful, by comparison. Luckily, I avoided the DIG.

My point of reference is that I live in TN, which has the BEST roads in the nation (and a 10-cent, earmarked gas tax to pay for it).

No, FO. You don't HAVE to accept a bunch of pork. You just tell them NO unitl they get it right. And if they don't get it, you kick their behinds out of office!

It's all because of the DEMOCRATS, yet you are trying to blame everything on Arnold, helping to get MORE Democrats elected.

HOLY MOLY!!! Now how did Arnold get into this conversation???? I didn't mention a dang thing about Arnold. I'm talking about Bonds, FO. Borrowing--Spending--Pork!

Don't you think you are a bit inconsistent?

Huh?

"And if they don't get it, you kick their behinds out of office! "

The problem is the DEMS and I don't see you advocating kicking THEM out of office, 99% of your posts are about kicking Arnold out of office, to get Angelides elected.

You're so WRONG. Those of on here who know both of these candidates would NEVER vote for EITHER one of them. They're both socialists and hostile to traditional American values. Both Arnold and Angelides - the Liberal Twins Of California Politics - aren't worth a conservative's time of day.

You really are obsessed with Arnold. This isn't about Arnold! I was talking about the BONDS--and the legislature. Forgive me if I didn't say "kick their DEM behinds" out of office--I thought that was understood since we were talking about fiscal irresponsibility of Legislators.

"We want to defeat socialism "

Please explain how do you defeat socialism by electing socialist Angelides to rubberstamp all the socialist bills the CA Dem Legislature churns out at a rate of about a thousand a year?

I am sure Angelides is very grateful to you for advocating that conservatives stay home in this election -- it is part of his win strategy.
