More4 risks US ire with Bush assassination film

Jason Deans, broadcast editor Thursday August 31, 2006 MediaGuardian.co.uk

Digital channel More4 will court controversy once again this autumn with a fictional piece, shot as a documentary, about the assassination of the US president, George Bush.

Death of a President seems certain to cause a furore on the other side of the Atlantic when it is premiered at the Toronto film festival next month.

In the UK the 90-minute film will be broadcast first on Channel 4's digital service in October.

The drama takes the form of a fictional documentary looking back at the assassination of Mr Bush in October 2007, after he has delivered a speech to business leaders in Chicago.

When Mr Bush arrives in the city he is confronted by a massive demonstration against the Iraq war and is gunned down by a sniper as he leaves the venue. The hunt for Mr Bush's killer focuses on a Syrian-born man, Jamal Abu Zikri.

Death of a President will use a combination of archive footage, CGI special effects and scripted scenes.

Actors play the fictional secret service agents and other aides who are with Mr Bush when he is shot and recall the incident in interviews recorded for the retrospective documentary.

Death of a President also looks at the differing viewpoints of the pro- and anti-Iraq war lobbies and the impact of Mr Bush's war on terror on the US.

I sure wish Cheney would send these nutjobs right over the edge tomorrow and announce he's decided to run for the Presidency after all in '08!

Are you saying the porn industry lowered its standards when it did a Bill Clinton movie? Lol - I hadn't thought of it that way, but good point!

Now that you mention it...

---
Something else we can blame Bill Clinton for - corrupting the morals of the porn industry.

Luckily, I have a bit thicker skin than the likes of Jerry Falwell....?!?!?

Sure, hmmm, ok, if you say so, and, oh, I KNOW I am going to regret asking...but, what the hey does Jerry Falwell have to do with you, anti, honoring my First Ammendment right to freedom of speech?

That's an amazing compilation of who's who that have deliberately or unknowingly cast their lot with this film.

"specialise in the development of detailed scenarios.. and the creation of video material to bring such exercises 'to life'."

Hmmmm....

what the hey does Jerry Falwell have to do with you, anti, honoring my First Ammendment right to freedom of speech?

Falwell sued Hustler magazine over a parody ad, claiming libel, emotional distress, etc. He lost on slander, won on emotional distress, but it was overturned by the Supreme Court. It's a very famous free speech case, so I'm surprised you never heard of it. Or maybe not.

Here is the e-mail that I sent this smart ass Brit TV critic, Cameron Robertson ( http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/tm_objectid=17661785%26method=full%26siteid=94762%26headline=bush%2dwhacked%2d%2dfury%2das%2ddubya%2d%2dassassinated%2d%2dby%2dc4-name_page.html) "Hello, I saw your opinion of this "documentary" on the UK Mirror's website this morning. 3 points, 1. You obviously don't read the polls in the US about the President's popularity. I have never seen it go below 30%, so you are talking out of your arse about that. 2. Yes, the 1st amendment (Bill of Right, US Constitution--since you Brits don't seem to know a hell of a lot about how our government works either), would protect this trash and it can be shown. But I would term it "irresponsible free speech", because it is nothing but fantasy from your political/ideological parts because you didn't get your way (President Bush getting voted out of office) during our 2004 general election. 3. As a "right wing Republican", thank you for delivering over 1 million votes to us when we have our mid term elections in November. Worked with the Guardians' "Write An Ohio Voter" campaign, didn't it? Stop meddling in our affairs. You hate the Iraq War? Take yourselves out of it. You certainly aren't the same mettle as your grandparents who defeated the Nazis in WW2. Peace at any cost, huh? Hope your daughters enjoy the burquas. As for me, I'll die fighting for what I believe in. I will also suggest that an American company script a "documentary" detailing why St Diana of Wales deserved to die. Or, how about a film about Princes Harry and William getting murdered and let's take that and discuss the constitutional monarchy? I've been to your country several times, and it has turned into the old Soviet Union. Have never been around a more negative, miserable bunch. I would suggest your NHS prescribe Prozac for every one of you. Regards!"

LINKS?

I gave links for the GHWB case, so you have no right to demand them again due to your poor memory.

gwbush.com case. I actually have that audio around somewhere

Environmental prostesters.

Fun, now that you have me finding those links again, I run across where during the 2000 election turmoil Bush had all of his gubernatorial papers hauled to his Dad's library without permission from the state, where they could more easily be kept out of reach of the public (at least until after his presidential tenure) than if the state archives retained title as is the state law (Bush ignored a law inconvenient to him? Tell me it ain't so!).

Anybody who makes it to President these days will have his faults. Unlike you, I remember that no matter how good President Bush is (and he is good), he's still a politician.

Bloom County did that years ago. They went out hunting with a liberal call that squaked some liberal mantras. Then a liberal popped up out of the bushes and got shot, screaming "Ouch! Socialized medicine!"

Worse, what if someone made a film depicting the assassination of Castro?

It would be popular in Miami.

Now that would be a cartoon worth reading!

The author was quite the leftist hippie, but he generally made fun of anything. At least the recurring character Cutter John, a wheelchair-bound Vietnam vet, is a consistent good guy in the strip.

Yep...it is REASONABLE to assume a 15 or 20 year old case parodying Jerry Falwell having sex with his mother in an outhouse should be required knowledge for all good Freepers...a tidbit especially crucial when posting about the difference between portraying the assassination of the current sitting president of the USA, George W Bush with a totally fictional president's assassination.

Note to self: Research all thin skinned evangelists suing porn peddler mags before posting on forum, even though said case happened, oh say, a dozen or so years before you gave a flip or knew jack about politics...no excuse, Girl...after all, we're talking reasonableness, logic, sound judgment here...assume nothing

Last note to self: must remember google is an essential tool when deficiencies in deductive reasoning are noted/suspected.

Definitely. It is one of the seminal free-speech cases in our country's history. And that's what this is about -- free speech. As the quote goes, free speech means nothing if it isn't applied to speech you dislike.

Last note to self: must remember google is an essential tool

Researching before asking is generally a good idea. It helps keep one from looking stupid.
