In an urban nightmare that enveloped two sides of San Francisco Bay, a Fremont man on Tuesday allegedly killed a pedestrian near his home with his SUV before continuing his rampage on San Francisco streets. There, he mowed down at least 13 others, including a teen on a bike and an elderly man with a cane, police said.

The San Francisco victims were expected to survive, but for a harrowing 14 minutes, a man driving a black Honda Pilot sport-utility vehicle veered onto sidewalks, over lawns and appeared to target pedestrians crossing popular shopping streets in several city neighborhoods.

At 12 separate San Francisco locations, he hit cars or people, sometimes missing his targets. Several of the injured were running errands or relaxing in and around the Laurel Heights neighborhood.

Joe Lee, an employee at F. Lorano and Son, an auto-repair shop near the intersection, said he also saw the aftermath of the hit-and-run. "It didn't look like he was aiming for cars," he said. "It looked like he was aiming for people."

SF Mayor Gavin Newsom told reporters that the rampage was "impossible to rationalize."

A month ago, the 29-year-old Fremont resident and one-time auto worker returned home after getting married in his native Afghanistan, his family said. There was a wedding celebration two weeks ago, and Popal seemed to have everything to live for, some family members said. The family said Popal's father had arranged the marriage.


Afghan community leader Farid Younos said Popal comes from a ``decent, pious and respectful'' family, devout members of the Abu Bakr Siddiq Mosque in Hayward.

I know exactly what you are saying.

It's going to have to come to that sooner rather than later I have a feeling, and liberals are just a target as any of us, so hopefully they'll wake up....These "random" acts may become common place. We have to be able to protect ourselves. Cops and the feds can't be everywhere.
