My own 2 cents, for what it's worth, is that we are seeing not PC run amok, but a studied effort to avoid panicking the sheep.

The assumption that we are sheep and need to be sheltered from events or, at the very least, have events interpreted for us by our intellectual superiors is one of the fundamental uses of PC. We are not qualified to see the world and its events. We need an interpretor. BAAAAAAAAAAAA!

You may be right. Of course, they have no problem with panicking the sheep about global warning or health care costs, how the Republicans are going to repeal the Civil Rights Act and sell all blacks back into slavery, cut Social Security and force Grandma to live on an all dog-food diet, etc.
I will give them this. I don't want to see an increase in attacks on innocents (I seem to remember that there was a case of an assault on a Sikh after 9/11 because he wore a turban. Sikhs are as Moslem as the Mormons.) And there are nut cases who are not Moslem. But their other "appeals for calmness" suggest Political Correctness is at work.
