MADONNA feels responsible for the children of the world and has found herself a "big, big project" to help orphans in Malawi.
Gwyneth Paltrow declares "I am African" in a new advertisement for a charity working in Africa.
The continent has long been a favourite destination for celebrity campaigners, going back to 1954 when Danny Kaye became UNICEF's goodwill ambassador.
U2's Bono and fellow Irish rocker Bob Geldof are Africa veterans, and more recently Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have brought Hollywood gloss to the continent.
But the latest flood of stars searching for a good cause has prompted a collective groan in the press and among bloggers, as people question their methods and motives.
"We are on the verge of farcical at this point," said Michael Wolff, columnist for Vanity Fair, when asked about Africa's popularity among famous performers.

Megalomaniacs, one and all

"Thank you Gweneth for my new toy!"
I'd love it if someone went off on Gwenyth for not supporting Asians or Indians or something. Just slap these dopes around for their compassion chic stunts.
Product of nepotism Gweneth needs the biggest slap. The best was a few years ago when she was speaking out against SUV`s and the next day the NY Post showed her driving her very own what else? SUV.
Oh, Gwyneth, please just shut up and look pretty. No one is interested in your ill-informed political and social views and it's conceit to think anyone would be.
Fake, Phony, Frauds one and all too.
Yes, turn around the racist claptrap on them!
This is nothing new. Does anybody remember those "We Are The World" charity concerts from the 1980's?
Oh, so she's the first African Best Actress winner? Maybe she could make an ad with our first black president.
Yes, but she's not Little People. Liberals raised in priviledge and wealth are different from Conservaties raised in similar circumstances only in that they feel the need to talk like they're socialists while living like republicans.
Whenever you are for something, a liberal sees that as taking away energy and resources from something else, so why not use the same standard on them? "I'm for Africans" = "Oh, so you don't give a crap about Asians, huh? Racist!" :)

Everything old is new again.
Isn't it possible that by 'helping' these people we make them rely on us?
Wouldn't it be better to leave them alone for the most part so that they can become self reliant?
Besides if you are going to try and help it is the complex political, ethnic and cultural problems that exist in these countries. Wouldn't it be better to concentrate on these root problems?
Words from an expert on "farce" if there ever was one.
