Rove and Libby: Hubris Authors Never Contacted Us
The CIA-leak investigation book -- without two key figures

By Byron York

Hubris: The Inside Story of Spin, Scandal, and the Selling of the Iraq War, the new book by the Nation’s David Corn and Newsweek’s Michael Isikoff, is the most in-depth single account yet of the CIA-leak investigation. But representatives of two central figures in the case, former Cheney chief of staff Lewis Libby and top White House aide Karl Rove, say the authors never got in touch with them, much less interviewed them, for the book.

“Neither Isikoff nor Corn ever contacted us to discuss anything about the book,” says Barbara Comstock, a spokeswoman for the Libby defense team.

“We were never contacted,” says Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Rove.

Hubris was rushed into release before its scheduled October publication date, and copies of the book are not yet available publicly. But throughout the CIA-leak affair, Corn’s reporting has relied heavily on former ambassador Joseph Wilson, the husband of CIA employee Valerie Plame Wilson. Corn was, in fact, the first person to publish a story explicitly raising the possibility that Mrs. Wilson was a “deep-cover” CIA officer. Based on an interview with Wilson (who Corn said did not talk about his wife’s status), Corn wrote on July 16, 2003 — just two days after the original Robert Novak column that started the CIA leak controversy — that “a pair of top Bush officials told a reporter the name of a CIA operative who apparently has worked under what's known as ‘nonofficial cover’ and who has had the dicey and difficult mission of tracking parties trying to buy or sell weapons of mass destruction or WMD material.”

”The Wilson smear was a thuggish act,” Corn, who is also the author of The Lies of George W. Bush: Mastering the Politics of Deception, concluded. Today, Corn is posting updates about Hubris at his website, bushlies.com.

In response to an e-mail asking whether he and Isikoff had contacted Rove and Libby, Corn responded:

Your impression is wrong — as you will see when you read the book and the source note. Mike — who also got your note — will reply to you with some more details about his dealings with the Rove and Libby camps. At one of the Libby hearings, as Wells was walking into the courtroom, I asked if he was talking to reporters, he said no. Mike, I believe, also tried to reach him and/or Jeffress and got nothing. Ask him about that. And we did put a request into the White House that covered a host of matters and got nothing from it. So it's simply not true we did not talk to — or try to talk to — the Rove and Libby sides. You might want to wonder about whoever told you that.

In an excerpt of Hubris published in Newsweek, Isikoff writes that Novak “caused a huge stir when he revealed that Valerie Plame, wife of Iraq-war critic Joseph Wilson, was a CIA officer.” But when it was originally published, Novak’s column caused virtually no stir at all — until Corn published an article claiming that Mrs. Wilson worked under "nonofficial cover" for the CIA. And even then, there wasn’t much notice until New York Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer picked up on Corn’s article and demanded an investigation. Those demands, combined with a leaked letter to the Justice Department from then-CIA Director George Tenet calling for an investigation, eventually created the political pressure that caused the Justice Department to begin a formal probe, which continues today under special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald.

Byron York, NR’s White House correspondent, is the author of the book The Vast Left Wing Conspiracy: The Untold Story of How Democratic Operatives, Eccentric Billionaires, Liberal Activists, and Assorted Celebrities Tried to Bring Down a President — and Why They’ll Try Even Harder Next Time.

"Washington, DC – The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., announced today that former President Bill Clinton, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa are among the confirmed speakers for the upcoming NCLR Annual Conference which will be held July 8-11 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, CA."

Rove nor Libby are required by any law to contact any "news" source to explain their side to prevent libel, it's up to the "news" source to assure the information that they publish is 100% accurate.

My guess is that Fitzgerald will not dismiss the charges against Libby until after the November elections, and then it will be very quietly, more like letting a deadline pass, than actual dismissal of charges.

York didn't say why it was rushed..but, since it was supposed to come out in October, right before the elections...I am sure the publisher and the DEMS were hoping it would seal the fate for the GOP in NOV..

BUT, since it makes the LIBS look worse, they had to get it out early...so that all of the "backlash" will have gone away...

WELL...I have been watching Sheppy Smiths show for 35 minutes...(my first time to watch TV today)...and I haven't heard about this at all...it is all Katrina..

SOOOOOOOO..they bring it out now...and it gets LOST in Katrina, which is another subject that they can beat Bush up with...

You know, it strikes me that this whole Wilson case is just another fabrication from the Dan Rather "Inaccurate, but true" school of Journalism. The prosecutor in the case just kept on investigating, knowing that there was no crime, but also knowing that if he kept questioning people long enough, he would trip up someone and then be able to make an accusation of conspiracy against Cheney.

Isikoff responded to York. Here it is:

http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZDcyMDRjOGRkNTk5M2ZiYThhZjIyZjQ4ZDM5MGMwYzE=

AUTHOR’S NOTE: A few hours after this story was posted, Isikoff responded with the following note:
I told [Rove lawyer Robert] Luskin I was working on a book late last year on all this and reminded him again in April at the time I was talking to him about Rove's last grand jury appearance as we went over— yet again — the Rove, Cooper and Novak issues that I was writing about for the magazine. (I have operated under the assumption that he and others didn't have a different version of the truth for a book than they do for the readers of Newsweek.) Mark [Corallo] was interviewed for the book last December (about a matter he dealt with at the Justice Department) and I spoke to him periodically over the next six months about matters relating to Rove. At one point, he even helped put me in touch with a source for the book. Barbara Comstock certainly knew I was working on a book for at least the last six months and I certainly spoke to her during that period. (The Libby lawyers have consistently no commented me and David, as they have everybody else.) Finally, Dan Bartlett was sent a lengthy email that included questions for the book relating to Rove unrelated to the leak case. He chose not to respond.

Actually with the exception of his stance on immigration, he's got my support 100%.

It seems like you're the hysterical one.

Kind of like:

Reporter: "Mr. Rove, when did you stop beating your wife?"

Rove: "I will not dignify that with a response!"

Headline: "Rove will not deny beating wife."

You pinged me earlier looking for a source for my statement that Corn was the first person to raise the notion that the Bush administration outed Plame in order to smear her husband. The article by Byron York on this thread also fingers Corn.
