Venezuela's president urges Malaysia to bypass West
KUALA LUMPUR: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Tuesday urged Malaysia to bypass Western powers as it expands its global business links, and offered Caracas as an ideal destination to develop its palm oil and petroleum technology.
"The solution for our countries is not the North,'' said Chavez.
"The solution is between us ... We have to have our own model, not the model the countries of the North want to impose upon us,'' said Chavez, while using a laser pointer on a world map to indicate where the United States and Europe was.
Chavez was on his second official visit to the Southeast Asian nation.
He leaves later Tuesday for Syria and then Angola, officials said.
The left-leaning Chavez, a frequent critic of U.S. President George W. Bush, then implored Malaysian companies to invest in Venezuela as they were "brothers.''
State oil companies from both countries were in discussions Tuesday, Chavez said, with agreements scheduled to be inked when Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi reciprocates his visit in December.
Chavez did not elaborate.
Earlier Tuesday, Chavez toured a palm oil production facility on the outskirts of Malaysia's largest city, Kuala Lumpur.
"Palm oil is very important to us. If Malaysia doesn't have the land to plant anymore, Venezuela has it,'' Chavez added.
He also dangled a Venezuelan oil carrot before the gathering of about 150 businessmen and government officials.
"Don't worry Malaysia. As a brother, we can help you explore and find oil. If you don't have oil (anymore) ... it will be provided for by Venezuela,'' he added.
Venezuela, he said, had even larger proven reserves than Saudi Arabia - the reason America was out to oust him.
"My friend Fidel Castro says ... Washington is looking for you,'' added Chavez, without elaborating.
Trade between the nations totaled US$39 million (euro30.47 million) last year, nearly double the US$19.8 million in 2004. - AP
Great time for a coupe d'etat in his backwater country.
Mr. Chavez thinks he will be the 'big' leader in the Middle East, bigger than President Bush, so he said in an earlier rant of his.
What he seems to forget, President Bush has 2 years left of his second term....and President Bush's attention is on Afghanistan; Iraq; Israel and Iran....I don't think he has time to wonder what Cindy Sheehan's boy toy is tromping around about...he has other people to keep an eye on that....
So if Mr. Chavez thinks all this 'lard and thunder' is going to get him somewhere, I hope he has fun.....lol....
Remember Korean Airlines flight 007, 23 years ago this week?
That somebody went oooooppppps and shot down a plane full of people??? Now who would shoot down fathead Chavez's plane????? Nice touch.
"He also dangled a Venezuelan oil carrot before the gathering of about 150 businessmen and government officials."
Solution to our fuel crisis? Plant oil carrots!
this is garbage
Chavez wants a higher price for his
difficult to refine, sour crude.
Hugo of Arabia.
