I had to rummage around a little to see what this is. Looks like there is no boom, and that they do this from time to time. They did one in February of this year.

So, it's like a scale model, then? Only crushes the fissle material, but lacking enough of it in the first place, to end up critical, or for an unstoppable chain reaction, "super critical"?

Critical mass, I take it, is enough for a self sustaning reaction...not enough to explode, but enough to end up getting really hot.

Super critical [mass] goes boom(!), in a hurry...

The purpose would seemingly be, to make better bombs. The ones we got not quite good enough?

I would prefer the "Starship Trooper" style bombs as described by Heinlein..

They inform the enemy how many seconds they have to live..
