So, it's like a scale model, then? Only crushes the fissle material, but lacking enough of it in the first place, to end up critical, or for an unstoppable chain reaction, "super critical"?
Critical mass, I take it, is enough for a self sustaning reaction...not enough to explode, but enough to end up getting really hot.
Super critical [mass] goes boom(!), in a hurry...
