The deteriorating condition of the United Nations headquarters should be a source of concern for firefighters and Turtle Bay residents who might be exposed to asbestos in the event of an emergency at the U.N.,Senator Schumer said.
At a news conference yesterday, Mr. Schumer pledged to ask Secretary-General Annan and Americas U.N.ambassador, John Bolton, to focus their attention on guiding to completion a plan to renovate the U.N.s landmark building. The plan will cost an estimated $1.9 billion.
*snip*
U.N. efforts to go forward with the renovations suffered a serious setback in May when the project head, Louis Frederic Reuter, quit his post. In June, the investigative office of Congress, the Government Accountability Office, released a report that cast doubts on whether the U.N.s internal watchdogs were capable of ensuring that the renovations were accomplished without waste.

The question should not be how the rebuilding of the UN is funded; it should be whether to fund an orderly implosion of the structure, or let it tumble down, while in full use and full of some of the world's most wicked and depraved people.
If you read the article, you'll see that even the rebuilding effort will be the target of greedy politicians sent to the UN on cushy budgets, to spend time in New York rather than such garden spots as Kinshasa, Zaire.
It's the residents.
Shut it down. NOW.
Send everyone home and tell them to get honest jobs.
The USA and Japan need to start pulling rank in this monetary fiasco called the UN.
The UN building should be bulldozed for the safety of New Yorkers and all Americans. It should not be rebuilt. The organization should be offered tents to meet in on the rubble until a new building can be built in Ulan Bator.
How about Geneva? Without the US?
Move the UN to Haiti.
How about beirut?
For once I agree with Chuckie. Demolish it. Full preferably.
If I were mayor, I'd turn off power and water.
The U.S. government should take back the land, get rid of the building and build a beautiful East Side park.

LOL! That's why I love coming here! Tell it like it is!
Harare, Zimbabwe with additional offices in Darfur.
I suggest they demolish the damn thing and not build another one.
If the buildings about to collapse any chance we could get the two Senators from New York to set up their offices there !!!
Gotta' love that Schumer some times ~ it's not that the UN building is a danger to its inhabitants, or even that it's loss might put a kink into world peace ~ no, with Chuckie it's that the nearby inhabitants, his constituents, might be affected negatively by the asbestos dust blowing out of the debris.
The UN building is deteriorating rapidly...
The debate team should schedule to draft reolution to address the problem no sooner that 2014.
Rip it down and send 'em home. In the interests of safety, of course...
Is that supposed to be a bad thing?
