We cannot lose this fight

I know how to fight.

Like most American boys – and perhaps a few girls – I learned the very basics of fighting on the playground in elementary school.

I’m not talking about specific fighting techniques, those would come much later: I’m talking about lessons learned about fighting that would shape my – and many others’ – understanding of fighting whether it be in a schoolyard, an alleyway, a boxing ring, or a battlefield.

For schoolyard fights, the best place to see some are on YouTube.

The commonplace cruelty of children is fully on display.

Way back, when I went to public school, boys were expected to stand up for themselves. Telling a teacher about a fight would be a very serious violation of the "code of the playground". It was the opposite for girls -- they were expected to not fight (things are different now), and they had no qualms about "telling" the teacher.

The girls' approach seemed less violent. What they didn't realize is that it only worked because the teacher (parents, other authority figure) had the greatest coercive powers. Usually, the teacher didn't have to use these coercive powers -- but, boys got strapped (and then spanked at home for good measure) often enough to be reminded.

Code Pink and other antiwar groups seem to be operating from the girls' playground rules, rather than the boys' code. "Don't fight", they say, "or I'm telling". The only difference is that now, there's no one to "tell" except the United Nations -- and all the bad boys (Iran, N.Korea, Syria, etc.) know that the teacher doesn't use the strap any more.

"The Outlaw Josey Wales, in which Wales (played by Clint Eastwood) is instructing a family of homesteaders about to square-off with band of Comanche Indians. He says, “When things look bad, and it looks like you’re not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean: I mean plumb mad-dog mean. ‘Cause if you lose your head and you give up, then you neither live nor win. “That’s just the way it is.” "

Hell yes. Cowboy diplomacy indeed.

Only picking grammatical nits here....but after reading the artcile, I notice that the proper title of the piece should be;

We must not lose this fight.

The use of the word 'cannot' indicates that we are invincible.
Well....maybe we are. Hmmmm.

The driveby media's disinformation campaign about the WOT and fighting in Iraq as well as the VietNam war weighs greatly about our "national consensus".
We were all for "going after the terrorists" for months after 9/11. It was only when the liberal media and liberal politicians felt safe again and crawled out their their cracks in the wall and they resumed their attacks against President Bush that we saw the beginning of the erosion of our "national concensus".
During the VietNam war, anti-American protestors like Kerry lied and was not called on it. They testified in Congress using false information, imposters, etc., and nobody called them on it because the MSM promoted the liberal agenda at the expense of informing the public.
As long as we have enemies within that are given a free ride to print falsehoods and misinformantion, "national concensus" is a myth.

I’m reminded of a scene in the 1970’s movie, The Outlaw Josey Wales, in which Wales (played by Clint Eastwood) is instructing a family of homesteaders about to square-off with band of Comanche Indians. He says, “When things look bad, and it looks like you’re not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean: I mean plumb mad-dog mean. ‘Cause if you lose your head and you give up, then you neither live nor win.

“That’s just the way it is.”

That'll happen to us, eventually. Once a city (or 5 or 10) is destroyed by them, we'll resolve the problem in not much longer than the flight time of an ICBM (or 10 or 50). Of course, by then the horrific damage would already have been done to us, and who knows what other powers will be ready to start making trouble for us while we're on the ground, writhing in pain from the steel-toed kick between our legs.

Good peice.

Unfortunately. Even if we don't follow through with the pullout, we are already doing some of the other "never do" moves listed.

i.e. Our soldiers hands are tied. We are constantly leaving them in vulnerable positions. We allow enemy combatants to take pot shots at our soldiers often with impunity.

We should be heavy hand on the country until the war is over. We came to do a job. We did not need nor ask for their permission. We should not permit dissent until we are ready to leave.

Mosque, newspaper, individual on the street. It doesn't matter. If dissent with the US mission is expressed, it should be quieted immediately. When we leave, when our mission is complete, then they will be free to express their opinion. Until then we are the occupiers and we shouldn't be shy about that fact.

I don't want them to suffer but I think we should not be so entwined with their society that they become "familiar" with our soldiers. Familiarity breeds contempt.

When our soldiers are patrolling a street their should be a certain forboding sense of respect that quiets everything in the aera down.

It's still a war until WE say it's over.

This is the only way to do it. If we are not comfortable with this, then we SHOULD declare "mission accomplished" and move on.

I agree with our mission over there. I just am not comfortable with the rules of engagement etc. anymore.

Am I going to far?

It was not quite two full months after 9-11 when Gephart and Daschle returned to their (much less than honest) daily bashings of the President and Administration with the same regularity and fervor as before 9-11.

The article dsicusses why we lost in Vietnam. For one thing, we permitted the enemy to exploit our strategic weaknesses (our failure to arrive at a national consensus aimed at winning; and our inability to destroy the enemy’s extra-national sanctuaries, his supply lines, and the heart of his command-and-control.)

Sound familiar?

"...would prove to the terrorists and countries like Iran and Syria “that America is nothing more than a paper tiger;” and that would only embolden the bad guys."

They ALREADY believe that we're too wobbly to have to respect. They're ALREADY convinced that a Big Move will back us off entirely. They also believe the same thing of Israel now.

They're gonna do it...the Big Move.
