The endorsement of U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell by 32nd District Democrats looked like a done deal. Until the day of the endorsement meeting, that is.
Cantwell was not endorsed by her home district at the Aug. 12 meeting. The Democrats did, however, endorse a homegrown candidate, one of Cantwell's four challengers in the primary election, political newcomer Hong Tran.
"Hong Tran asked for an endorsement and she received it," said district chair Lila Smith. "Maria's campaign asked for an endorsement and she didn't receive one."
It was possible to endorse both candidates, said Smith
. . .
Tran was present at the endorsement meeting, while Cantwell opted to send a member of her campaign staff, Mark Wilson. Wilson was campaigning as a primary opponent to Cantwell until he withdrew in July and endorsed the incumbent.
It was expected that Cantwell would receive an endorsement, Smith said, until Wilson "quite frankly insulted the people in the district." She declined to elaborate on Wilson's comments. Attempts to contact Wilson were unsuccessful by The Enterprise deadline.

Mark Wilson was one of Cantwell's primary opponents until he dropped out and went to work for her for $8000/month. She may need to reconsider that.
Looks like she bought off the wrong guy!
Already on it... *\;-)
If they're dumb enough to vote for a senator who wears tennis shoes, why wouldn't they also vote for Cantwell?
Tran has done very well considering she is a nobody.
Her parents are staunch Republicans. She and her family escaped South Viet Nam when Saigon fell. They were picked up by the Navy. She is an anti-Iraq war candidate who says Iraq is NOT like Viet Nam. She was going to run against Jim McDermott saying he doesn't do enough for poor people but chose Cantwell instead. Another loony Seattle lib, wait that is redundant!
This district is the home district for both Cantwell and Patty Murray. It is predominately a "lunch bucket" Democratic district, but the last redistricting brought in some areas that are more Republican.
The Democrats in this district have the habit of competing as to who can be the most liberal and politically correct. The last intercenine battle, the one that put Marilyn Chase in the state House of Representatives replacing Carolyn Edmonds, was all about who supported Gene McCarthy in 1968 and who didn't. It's really that stupid.
The Hard Left of the Democratic Party in this state is thoroughly pissed off at Cantwell for supporting Bush in Iraq. Cantwell has tried for 6 years to position herself as the modern day "Scoop" Jackson while Patty Murray has positioned herself for 14 years as the modern day Warren Magnuson, ie. the state's chief purveyor of federal pork. But the Democratic Party has changed, as Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman found out. There is no longer any room for a modern day "Scoop" Jackson, and Cantwell is finding that out.
Up to now, Cantwell has succeded in buying out her opponents, except for those who are so politically pure that they absolutely must oppose her for supporting the war. This battle in the 32nd District is still about Gene McCarthy and 1968.
The Hard Left wants Cantwell out and would like to pull a "Ned Lamont" in Washington. They don't have the juice to do this, but the politically pure must still keep the fires of 1968 burning.
I still see those stickers -- along with "Friends don't let their friends vote Republican."
We in Washington have the dubious distinction of having the dumbest senatorial delegation in DC. Maria Cantwell is a nitwit, and Patty Murray is a complete oxygen thief.
Best bumpersticker response: "Vote Democrat--It's Easier Than Thinking."
What Washington Needs Washington needs a Senator who will stand up for core democratic values. We need a strong voice for working families. We need a Senator who understands that we don't want to send our jobs overseas, we don't want laws that violate our civil rights, and we don't want war.
As your U.S. Senator I will:
Work hard to keep our jobs in America. Trade agreements like NAFTA, CAFTA, and the WTO are sending our jobs overseas.
Demand the repeal of the US Patriot Act. As Americans our greatest asset is our civil rights, and they must be protected.
Fight for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. Troops from Iraq. We want our soldiers home safe, and we want them home now.
I am in the 32nd District too. There are plenty of hard left who would like to see someone other than Cantwell. I just don't think Hong Tran has enough experience to be their person - in fact she has NO experience in politics.
Careful. That's how Patty Murray got elected in '92.
Every time I get cut-off by a driver in Seattle, the car has some sort of antiBush sticker. They are an angry bitter lot.
There is some hope in Mudville...
