Not much of a mystery - if the cord moved while the shutter was open, it would have blurred and would then become more difficult to see against a dark BG - if you look you can see the blur.
I just hope the wife of the soldier in fron t doesn't see this pic.

The singer's left hand is slightly motion-blurred. This indicates that a swinging mic cord could easily have been *really* blurred. The room was probably a bit dim, and the exposure fairly long.

Honestly...I have to go with the "blurred cord" hypothesis on this one. What would anybody gain from photoshopping out half of a microphone cord? Plus, there's a slight blur that extends up from the visible part of the cord to the top of the picture.

It's not photoshopped - it's blurred. The bottom of the cord wouldn't necessarily move if there's enough play in the 'free' portion of the cable.
