Dems better take Hillary off board
Boston Herald ^ | 08/28/06 | Brett Arends

Posted on 08/28/2006 10:31:22 AM PDT by raccoonradio

When chess buffs get bored, they sometimes fool around with a game called “suicide chess.” The rules are similar, but the goal is to lose all your pieces.

If you need an illustration, just watch the Democrats.

How else do you explain the fact that so many of them are seriously considering nominating Hillary Clinton for president in 2008?

Earlier this month I revealed here that even 45 percent of Democrats, in “purple” New Hampshire, tell focus groups they hate her. Hate.

Among their comments:

“B-tch . . . political wh-re . . . evil . . . diabolical.”

It doesn’t matter why. It doesn’t matter if it’s unfair. These people will not vote for her in a general election.

So you’d think the party would be throwing itself, right now, into a relentless quest for a more viable alternative. Someone who could carry the party’s colors to victory in 2008.

Instead the party establishment is pouring its time, money and effort into launching the USS Hillary - even though the ship is leaving port already holed below the waterline.

Hence the encouraging cover piece in Time magazine. And all the political analysts around who insist her negatives are “softening” and she’s “winning people around.”

Breathless TV reporters are spun to argue that “53 percent of voters view her positively” - ignoring the fact that, obviously, 47 percent do not. For many, it is a deep and visceral hatred.

Likely outcome? A sudden, panicked reappraisal early in 2008, and a backup nominee picked in haste. As they did last time.

More suicide chess? Take the party’s decision this month to hold an early caucus in 2008 in . . . Nevada.

Call it the Las Vegas caucus, because that’s where most state Democrats live.

What a great way to appeal to more “values voters.” Just imagine the backdrops on the nightly news. Good for the party? Hardly.

But great for Senate minority leader Harry Reid . . . of Nevada. His casino and service union pals will surely be grateful for all the extra traffic during February’s slow season. We can only guess at the role of House minority leader Nancy Pelosi and party chairman Howard Dean here.

New Hampshire’s party establishment humiliated Pelosi back in 1983. She tried ordering Secretary of State Bill Gardner to postpone the ’84 primary to meet party rules. He sent her away.

And it was New Hampshire that finally sunk Dean’s presidential campaign in 2004, days after his infamous “Dean Scream.” Yet more suicide chess?

The Republicans have largely abandoned the center. But instead of trying to capture it, many Democrats are busy trying to amputate their conservative wing, lest they attract too many moderates in November. Witness Joe Lieberman’s primary defeat in Connecticut.

Note: If Lieberman had been the nominee in 2004, I doubt George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld would still be delighting us all with their presence.

Wasn’t that supposed to be Job No. 1? Let’s be honest. America’s first experience of All-Republican government in 50 years has not been a success. From Iraq, to the deficits, to fuel prices, simply to the ugly tone of the administration, the God and Oil Party has managed to alienate most moderates and many true conservatives.

So you’d expect the opposition to be at 65 percent in the polls and heading for a landslide. Instead, there is still a real chance the GOP will keep one or even both houses of Congress this fall...and the White House in two years’ time. Call it suicide chess, Democrat style.

Arends seems to be saying, Republicans bad, Dems far worse...but at least he gives us a little hope. Hillary WILL...NOT...WIN...

When you are so far to the left that the leftward fringe the GOP has written off looks like "the center", then your perspective is a little bit suspect, but at least this guy recognizes that hillary is a pariah.

Hillary Clinton is to the Demcrats what Rudy Giuliani is to the Republicans.

But the Dems have definitely abandoned the right--even to the point of throwing aside one particular candidate who agrees with us on the WOT but still holds liberal views otherwise...
say it ain't so, Joe!

I don't read it that way. I see him saying:

"GOP is evil, but the Dims are too stupid to take advantage of the situation."

But he also says that Republicans continue "to alienate....many true conservatives."

Now this is a real problem. Not that Hillary and the Dems don't have their own issues, but without the intellectual horsepower of the conservative thinkers, the Republicans are just another scheme to loot the Treasury.

Well, at least they don't screw up private business as well....

Hillary Clinton is to the Demcrats what Rudy Giuliani is to the Republicans.

Not sure about that - Rudy is definitely not a conservative - but I don't see that he is held in actual disdain - as is Hillary.

Appropriate, since her butt is as big as a battleship!

The Republicans have largely abandoned the center.

Except for the current President and a majority of Senate Republicans.

"Not sure about that - Rudy is definitely not a conservative - but I don't see that he is held in actual disdain - as is Hillary."

Not yet, anyway. He will, as more conservatives see where he stands on their issues.
