TS/Hurricane/TS Ernesto
NWS/NHC ^ | 28 August 2006 | NHC

Posted on 08/28/2006 7:27:21 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Florida Governor Jeb Bush ordered a state of emergency in advance of Ernesto's anticipated Florida landfall as a hurricane. During his press briefing, Governor Bush emphasized the need to, "Have your family plan in place. Be prepared to be on your own for 72 hours. I know it sounds like a broken record." Jeb then repeated his message in Spanish.

All of the South Florida peninsula and Keys are under a hurricane watch, and portions of the watch areas may be upgraded to hurricane warnings later today.

NASA is moving Space Shuttle Atlantis from the launch pad back to its protective hangar, with the launch postponed until at least Sept. 7-8.

Hurricane Ernesto was downgraded to Tropical Storm status after battering Haiti and the Dominican Republic all day Sunday. The death toll in Haiti from Ernesto currently stands at 1 person; storm reports from Hispaniola are scarce this morning.

Ernesto has approached the eastern portion of Cuba, where the government issued a hurricane warning for six provinces, tourists were evacuated, and baseball games were played earlier Sunday than originally scheduled.

I had to chuckle at that

Just heard from my soldier Son-in-law that his unit's preparing to be deployed in Florida, should Ernesto not be very polite. He's in Kansas...

I opened it up with LViewPro and turned it into a negative, then I could see the X with the arrow heading up Cuba parallel to the coast. I can't upload the transformed image though.

This loop will give you a some sense that it is getting much better organized at many levels.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/nwatl/loop-ir2.html

Within three to four hours, we should be able to tell exactly where the center is and which direction Ernesto is really heading.

It appears to me to be right along the coast, but it is a broad circulation, so who knows it could recenter itself off the coast now that it is starting to wrap up again.

And since you posted your message I think the forecast has changed at least twice?! CRAZY storm, isn't it?

So..I'm sticking to my prediction earlier..it will be like a normal Florida summer storm..but will just last a little longer:)

Just last week we had 55 MPH winds here with torential rain and lightning ..typical summer afternoon!

I don't think the center is going to be over Florida that long. I'm afraid it might ride the gulf stream futher offshore, stenghtening as it goes, coming in as a Cat 2 or a little higher before hitting the Carolina coast.

I hope I'm wrong. Time will tell.

Skeetobite/NHC is definitely leaning east. Looks like there could be a whole lot of wet stuff.
