LEX 18 News ended an evening recap of yesterdays coverage of the Comair Flight 5191 crash for the live broadcast of the prime-time Emmy Awards. The annual TV awards show opened with shots of host Conan OBrien bouncing inside a plane before it crashed on an island in a spoof of ABCs hit show Lost.
WLEXs president and general manager, Tim Gilbert, who was home watching the telecast with his family, was stunned by the intro; if station managers had known about the intro before the broadcast, Lexington viewers wouldnt have seen it, he said.
It was a live telecast we were completely helpless, Gilbert said of the Emmys. By the time we began to react, it was over. At the station, we were as horrified as they were at home.
Gilbert said hell complain to NBC, but he said an apology wont make up for insensitivity.
They could have killed the opening and it wouldn't have hurt the show at all, Gilbert said. We wish somebody had thought this through. Its somewhere between ignorance and incompetence.
What if "Lost" were premiering tonight? Would that have to be cancelled too? Give me a break.
I watched the video at that link, and it seemed to end prematurely. As Conan was emerging from the waves, I expected him to say, "It's ..." and have the Monty Python theme come on.
This hyper sensitivity is worse than the political correctness crap...
No wonder English humor is lost on many Americans...
I watched it, it was hilarious, and while I'm sorry for the people that died in the plane crash, these things happen. I'm sure some channel out there had a movie with a plane crashing in it too.
Of course no one seems to give a crap when a plane crashes in another country...
Drudge was getting all pissy and bitchy about this tonite, he had nothing to talk about, so he ginned up a bunch of false outrage.
Im with you ..Why would you ever watch TV when you have the internet..I spend my time reading and learning ..TV is a waste. I haven't a clue who ANY of those "stars " are .
That's HEDLEY Lamarr!
If my mother/father/or loved one have been on that plane this morning I think it'd be fairly odd for me to be watching the Emmys tonight, but if I was, it'd be because I like TV a lot.
It was a very well done takeoff on LOST, a very popular show. Only the anti-TV naysayers who never watch anything are feigning upset at it. People had all kinds of tragedies today, some made the news, many did not. Shows must go on.
well, you didn't answer my question reg. any family members "lost" on a flight. how would you feel if it happened to your loved ones and then saw a skit like this so soon after? I am all for comedy, (jackie g. was the best) but I just think that this gag could have been left out. the award shows do have contingency plans (gags/skits etc.) in place to deal with late breaking events. I have had a loved one go down on a commercial flight. it is not funny.
I'm so upset I missed the beginning!! There were weather warnings all over the tube tonight and I only caught the last few seconds of the opening skit when our NBC affiliate finally decided to air the show.
Ok, if a family member of mine was killed in a car accident this morning, should I go start protesting every TV show and movie that shows a car accident for the next 3 months?
no. ten or so hours later tho is a bit soon I think to make funny over this.
If you lost a friend or loved one in the crash, I doubt you would have been watching television tonight, but if you decided to turn the TV on for a few minutes and saw something like this, you would have been terrified. even if you were someone who lives in Lexington and was shook up by the whole thing, you would think it was sick.
NBC should give an apology. more proof that the Main Stream Media are a bunch of creepy insensitive pricks.
What did they say Bobby.I missed most of it and only caught a little at the end.(((Hugs)))
thank you.
It's a ceremony where the useful idiots congratulate each other on their superiority.
...but that's not important right now.
<< These idiots seem to find the funniest things in human tragedy. >>
It's a British thing. And is reflective of the Euro-peonization of the morally and intellectually lightweight and increasingly ludicrous lunatic left.
Woooo-hoooo! I'm just hearing about it this morning. Didn't know the Emmys were even on last night. Great news!
But talk about shocked--the Logans were robbed!
Gregory Itzin lost to who? Alan Alda!? From the "West Wing", of course (canceled).
And Jean Smart lost to Blythe Danner from "Huff" (also canceled).
What a jip!
What I say!
Freakin' Alan Alda ...
That'd be pretty stupid of them :~)
Amen! Finally a common sense response.
I get so tired of the offended-by-everything crowd on FR.
