LEX 18 officials shocked by Emmy Awards’ plane-crash spoof intro

LEX 18 News ended an evening recap of yesterday’s coverage of the Comair Flight 5191 crash for the live broadcast of the prime-time Emmy Awards. The annual TV awards show opened with shots of host Conan O’Brien bouncing inside a plane before it crashed on an island in a spoof of ABC’s hit show Lost.

WLEX’s president and general manager, Tim Gilbert, who was home watching the telecast with his family, was “stunned” by the intro; if station managers had known about the intro before the broadcast, Lexington viewers wouldn’t have seen it, he said.

“It was a live telecast — we were completely helpless,” Gilbert said of the Emmys. “By the time we began to react, it was over. At the station, we were as horrified as they were at home.”

Gilbert said he’ll complain to NBC, but he said an apology won’t make up for insensitivity.

“They could have killed the opening and it wouldn't have hurt the show at all,” Gilbert said. “We wish somebody had thought this through. It’s somewhere between ignorance and incompetence.”

" There was no way NBC could have known a plane was going to crash today."

Perhaps they should have watched the news. Seems they were the only people in the country who didn't know a plane crashed.

That opening was planned for over a month. Back in July, Kiefer and Mary Lynn took some time from filming Season 6 to film the intro.

Uhhhh....Mr. LEX18 official, I got news for you. Hollywood doesn't even know where Lexington is. Let alone that a plane crashed there.

The local Fox affiliate is showing it here in Denver.

You're right, Kiefer was nice enough to give up some of his time 6 months ago so the callous disregard for the families is ok.

But then I didn't watch as I rarely watch CBS, NBC, or ABC for any reason.

I've learned ALL about Her Supreme Beauteousness Hedy, there's a thread over a thousand posts long all about her over at the TCM forums, and some gorgeous pictures of her :) It's pretty much the consensus that she was not only beautiful but intelligent, and she's much admired, including by me :)

They filmed it last month.

That said, some people just get too offended.

I can't even begin to count how many TV shows had to do a bunch of editing as a result of September 11th because some people were being offended.

Figures. If it were a regular season game I'd be hot about not getting it.

I just watched that intro, it was hilarious, and how anyone could be offended by that is beyond me :~)

Please.

I'm sorry for their loss, but this was a parody of a wildly successful television show on a program about television shows. Shall we take LOST off the air until a suitable mourning period has passed?

Far too sensitive. Life has to go on.

Please...this skit was written and performed days ago, if not weeks.

I am pretty sure this skit was designed to parody LOST. I'm not 100% because I've only seen LOST once or twice and the link that Drudge has is only about 15 seconds long.

Do you think that Airplane I/II movies weren't funny?

I saw the opening and it was in bad taste all the way around in my opinion. Not only did we have a crash today, but the terror plot et al made this very not funny. I was surprised they would do this, but I don't know why I should have been.

I'm even more shocked that 24 won best drama and Kiefer won for best actor!!!!

Can't stand O'Brien, but the opening was pretty funny. It really skewered the limousine liberals in Hollywood.
