LEX 18 officials shocked by Emmy Awards’ plane-crash spoof intro

LEX 18 News ended an evening recap of yesterday’s coverage of the Comair Flight 5191 crash for the live broadcast of the prime-time Emmy Awards. The annual TV awards show opened with shots of host Conan O’Brien bouncing inside a plane before it crashed on an island in a spoof of ABC’s hit show Lost.

WLEX’s president and general manager, Tim Gilbert, who was home watching the telecast with his family, was “stunned” by the intro; if station managers had known about the intro before the broadcast, Lexington viewers wouldn’t have seen it, he said.

“It was a live telecast — we were completely helpless,” Gilbert said of the Emmys. “By the time we began to react, it was over. At the station, we were as horrified as they were at home.”

Gilbert said he’ll complain to NBC, but he said an apology won’t make up for insensitivity.

“They could have killed the opening and it wouldn't have hurt the show at all,” Gilbert said. “We wish somebody had thought this through. It’s somewhere between ignorance and incompetence.”

Oh please.. people's oversensitivity at it's finest.

The intro had nothing to do with the plane crash in KY and you know it.

If a movie ever shows a football injury should everyone who ever had a football injury get upset by it?

Should the movie Bad Boys be banned from all networks on any day that a hooker is killed somewhere in America?

NUTS

Sorry I missed it but the Broncos are on

I know it's only preseason and all that, but Jay Cutler looks like a star.

I missed it.

I haven't watched an awards show in years. It's one thing to admire people for their talent. It's quite another to go into masturbatory paroxysms over the possibility that you might get to see them during some marathon ego-fest.

He does have potential. Maybe Jake will feel him on his heels and find the endzone more often.

But NBC knew it had an affiliate in Lexington. The net could've called the affiliate and given them a heads up. That would've been the decent thing to do.

Note to affiliates: This just ought to be further proof of what the nets really think of you....

Phooey. Should they have preempted LOST if there was a plane crash? A cop show because there had been a murder or a car chase that day? Really, it's an absurd level of oversensitive blame mongering by people who have never and will never see anything good coming out of entertainment regardless of what they do.

I think that was the first time I`ve seen Hondo, very good western about
the Apaches

When my daddy was wounded 3 days after D-Day he was in the hospital
and Hedy Lamarr came in to visit wounded soldiers, any way she sat on his
bed and talked with him.

He always loved to tell that story, about all he`d say the war tho

You can't apologize in advance for stuff like that, the apology doesn't count in advance :~)

An apology is required every time an Alan Alda photo is posted. It's FR law ;)

PC-ness is something for wimpy liberals, not conservatives. It was a FUNNY skit, meant to spoof Billy Crystal's Oscar intros and mock the Emmy nomination process, not to make light of a tragedy.

As for the Emmys, I'm a LOST FANatic myself, so I'm still smarting about the fact that they got snubbed. But I'll say that 24, despite it's sucky/ depressing ending is much better than the West Wing (which stole LOST's nomination).

I agree it was bad timing, but the skit was hilarious. My whole family and I were laughing through the entire skit.

It was inappropriate.

The opening could have easily deleted the airplane scene, and it would have been deleted if the plane had taken off and crashed in LA, instead of flyover country.

Some empathy.

Sheesh, it wasn't about THAT crash it was about TV series "Lost" crash!

I don't even watch "Lost and that obvious difference wasn't lost on me!
Haven't those people ever heard of "context people, context!"
It was a clever, well written opening sequence...
