Breaking on Fox right now. "The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm could grow by Thursday into a hurricane as strong as Katrina, which struck the city a year ago Tuesday." (Story released earlier, can't find current update)

The Piper aircraft conpany located in Vero Beach, 11 miles to the North of us.
The area was devastated.
I lived there for 20 years.
I am very well aware of the partisan denial that infects otherwise healthy minds (how much more so the Floridian mind), as well.
If the approach of a hurricane is an "emergency," than so is the approach of an asteroid, or global warming.
Re: my paranoid blather: Please, by all means, enumerate to me your constitutional rights under a declared state of emergency. My question was genuine.
Actually- I'm quite content to live in Florida's "state of emergency" for a few days. Because we have an ADULT as governor here in Florida- he plans ahead- and has gotten to be very adept at handling these hurricanes.
Why so early? Because unlike NOLA- Florida knows it takes time to mobilize and prepare. If Jeb declared a SOE tomorrow as it was hitting the state- no one would be ready.
If Jeb declared a SOE tomorrow as it was hitting the state- no one would be ready.
So, you're saying that, in order for people to "be ready," Jeb Bush has to declare a state of emergency and do it early enough?
There was a time - even before fancy radar, the internet, and continuously updated news reports, that people made themselves "ready" of their own responsibility as adults, without relying on the "adult" governor (you could say, "nanny") to tell them it was time.
***This is really a ridiculous discussion. Have a nice day.
Please change this to ....CRIST....C R I S T....
Yes, Piper was still a mess of collapsed buildings last spring when we had a family open house there.
Sebastian is my kids home...they were in a tiny trailer, in the front yard, for over a year.87K damage.
I am in indialantic and had 177K damage which was just settled Feb. this year, so few repairs have been made. Skylights still boarded and pool cage down in a heap. No tiles available for the roof yet so I am in Virginia waiting...imagine how much water will run in, cross the house and exit to the pool, this time too!
The problems and beauty of beach life all in one.
His declaring the "state" activates the efforts. Brevard "old folks" are already being bussed out to shelters.
Jeb is doing his job...not a diety. I would be glad to tell you what he did for me though...way beyond the call of duty...just in reply to a letter.
The approach of a hurricane -- nay, a tropical storm -- is not, in my opinion, grounds to ratchet up authority. Unless, possibly, you're surrounded by aging dykes.
It's about self government, not appeasing insurance companies, lawyers, and pollsters.
For heavens sake, it's not a hurracane, its a rather wussie tropical storm with a lot of rain...
Geeze
I said crist casue crist has a christ complex.
- and I doubt that anyone else here in Florida would give it a thought, except for the possible tin foil hat wearing, grassy knoll DU types.
this is abundantly clear.
Sounds like how the thread about this must look on DU. lol
sorry I do not agree.
The local buses stopped their routes and all the old people were called and pick-up times arranged...shelters opened. Many apartments and homes in the inner area can not be safe even in this kind of storm...it takes time to set it all up.
It seems it is not going to be a repeat of labor day 2004. Everyone will be glad to see that and cancel lots of evacuation plans.
Most of us have homes built for the area and just buy some extra water and have storm parties until it is over....exactly as we did for snow storms predicted and only sometimes happening in NY.
How this became about aging dykes is a mystery to me.
Appeasing Insurance companies, lawyers and pollsters seems off-the-mark in the situation under discussuion...Jeb doing his job.
What you say is so true! In spite of getting hammered in 2004 - with 4 hurricanes - we always knew what to have on hand and now are getting better at it. I don't feel panicked at all -my windows have all been replaced at my new home with 130 mph windows and /or rolldown shutters, generator, rolling airconditioner and all my supplies in a big tupperware box. Florida has had an active plan for years - unlike showboat Nabin and the incompetent Gov from LA. They still don't have a damn plan!
He is -- by far -- the best governor in the USA and -- if it weren't for his last name -- he'd be our next president.
He is -- by far -- the one of the better governors in the USA and -- if it weren't for his playing fast and loose with property rights/condemnation authority to favor big developers -- he'd be could make a good next president.
How's that?
Lookin' good, Gallagher bud.
Is this really still Breaking News?
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA that was funny as SH*T! Loved it! JWU2NO (Just Wanted You To Know)
