Sen. Biden Brags: "My State Was A Slave State"
Joe, I was born in a hospital. But that doesn't make me a doctor!
Slavery was NOT outlawed in 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation affected only the states in REBELLION, and was irrelevant anyway, till they surrendered in April 1865. Non-rebelling (Union) slave states still had slaves till the 13th Amendment was ratified, Dec 6, 1865.
Look at the bright side-you could be in Michigan with Stabenow. "Do Nothing Debbie," who has gotten only one bill signed into law after 5 years and 9 months: naming a downtown Detroit federal building after the late civil rights icon Rosa Parks.
Well, sure. These guys have no respect to the South. I'm sure he thought they'd be impressed.
Darn shame when you have use "My State Was A Slave State" in order to get the dumb and dumber votes.
True, but until 1829 NY was a slave state and I believe the southern half of Jersey, south of Trenton allowed the continuation of the practice to survive with those who had been slaves prior to a date in the 1820s. Thus there were a handful of legal slaves in the Garden State at the start of the Civil War. Just another silly non sequitur from the dumbest person in the Senate.
Hey Joe, don't sign me up for reparation payment. My grandparents didn't immigrate legally till the 1930's.
Actually, the Emancipation Proclaimation did not apply to Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Missouri, New Orleans (then under Federal control) or any state not in rebellion. So Lincoln only freed the slaves in the Confederacy, which he did not control and not the slaves in the Union, which he did control.
Wouldn't Biden's remark be the equivalent of Ted Kennedy saying, "You know, we used to burn witches in Massachusetts."?
Glad Biden is proud of his state's slave owning heritage. Massachusetts was a slave state until 1780 and a witch hanging state until 1692, though few people are proud of it.
Oh, I should think that any reasonably powerful electromagnet would find him quite attractive.
Biden is correct on this one. Research shows that Down the River Sales Inc. was a Delaware corporation.
My state was a slave state, my state is anything but a NE liberal state. He's talking about DE, and he thinks this will connect him with SC to talk about slavery. He is clueless.
Ironically, the two most liberal cities in our state contained the majority of slaves during Massachusett's slave owning history. Those cities of course being The People's Republic of Cambridge, and Mumblesland-Boston.
Yeah, it was a slave state and then the Republicans came and kicked butt and we're ready to do it to you again, 'plugs.
The Emancipation Proclamation did not apply to slaves living in Delaware since Delaware had not seceded from the Union. Even though the number of slaves in Delaware was rather small (they were outnumbered by free persons of color), Delaware slaveholders were very resistant to any plan for gradual emancipation. Slavery was abolished there only when the 13th amendment took effect, as far as I know (unless the legislature finally ended it during the interval between the end of the war and the ratification of the 13th amendment in Dec. 1865).
Liberal White Guilt on full display.
Then it was a democrat state, not a republican state.
