Washington Whispers
It's Gingrich's to Lose in 2008
Sorry, Hillary. And Big John, you might have missed your chance in 2000.
That's because a new and innovative poll from John Zogby about 2008 presidential candidates finds former Republican Speaker Newt Gingrich way out front of fellow GOP-ers like Sen. John McCain and also finds moderates like former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner far ahead of libs like Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Here's the unusual thing about the Zogby poll released to Whispers: When questioning likely primary voters, only brief biographies and not names were given.
In other words, voters picked the one with the best experience. Without her name recognition working for her, Clinton came in a miserable sixth out of 10.
"It looks like the Democrats want to grab the middle," says Zogby, who says outside-the-beltway Democrats lean moderate.
Surprises on the GOP side: Harsh immigration critic Rep. Tom Tancredo ranks fourth, showing the power of the anti-immigrant issue.
Is the poll important? Big time. In 1999, Zogby's "blind bios" poll identified "maverick" McCain as a very attractive candidate in primary states long before he almost knocked off George W. Bush.
The Democratic order and percentage: Warner, 14.8; retired Gen. Wesley Clark, 14.2; Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold, 12.2; Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, 11.1; former Sen. John Edwards, 10.4; Clinton, 5.6; New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, 5.3; former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, 4.9; Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, 4.9; Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, 3; Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, 2.8.
The GOP rankings: Gingrich, 21.4; McCain, 13.3; former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 11.2; Tancredo, 9.9; Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, 6.1; Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, 5.8; Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, 5.6; Virginia Sen. George Allen, 4.9; Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback,4.3; Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 3.8; New York Gov. George Pataki, 2.8.

He is all so a great speaker!
I don't think Zogby is very reputable.....
Beyond that, I don't think any of the GOP top 4 can win a general election....
You would vote for someone with Newt's moral character? You would vote for someone that has teamed up with Hillary on healthcare issues? Just because he has (R) behind his name doesn't mean he's worthly of a conservative vote. Newt's washed up....he's a has been.
I can see it now: "hey, let's put out that someone for the Repeublicans sure to lose, say Gingrich, is the front runner and in fact it's his to lose."
Zogby's brother; "yeah".
I agree. Newt has WAY TOO MUCH BAGGAGE. He would get savaged by the MSM, while Hillary would get a queens welcome. Unfortunately, Hillary would win then because her MANY, MANY scandals would be ignored.
Liberal hatred will be more apparent than ever.
McLame or Rudy could win the general. (against Hills and without Bloomie running as an 'I')
Yes, as soon as holy-voters find out the man best suited to run the country is Newt, their spleens take over. These are the same folks who vote a town dry, and then move.
I agree. McCain or Rudy would wipe the floor with Hillary.
Rudy would flip New York.
That would be the difference I think.
I don't know if McLame could carry Ohio or Virginia...
There is a lot of time yes, but there are a LOT of question marks on both sides.
And Zogby? Always good to listen to the Islamist enemy posing as a neutral "pollster". F him.
Newt would make a great Secretary of State, or should John Bolton retire, an excellent Ambassador to the U.N., but his own personal baggage would undermine any bid for the presidency. An unfortunate fact of political life.
If not as a running mate, the GOP contender should pre-announce Tancredo as the next head of DHS.
You're analysis is spot on. This is the Zogby attempt to "Rope Dopes". Fortunately for us, one has to be smart to rope dopes, and Zogby is too stupid & liberal to get anyone with any intelligence to bite.
Zogby just wants Gingrich to run, so he will be pounded by the media for being forced out as speaker and what he was being accused of at the time. It will make him look unelectable and the donks would win then. I like Newt but he is unelectable.

Yes, of course, everyone who favors morals of any kind is a fool and a hypocrite. That's a notion sure to win elections, isn't it?
Bingo! Newt won't get to first base in any run for President. His baggage is enormous plus he had to resign as Speaker of the House after attacking Clinton. Not someone who would ever get the Presidential nod in the GOP where family values still count!
The socons managed to separate Dubya's past morals from his ability to govern, aye, but 'this time it's different.'
