It's Gingrich's to Lose (Zogby '08 White House Poll Shows Tancredo 4th)

Washington Whispers

It's Gingrich's to Lose in 2008

Sorry, Hillary. And Big John, you might have missed your chance in 2000.

That's because a new and innovative poll from John Zogby about 2008 presidential candidates finds former Republican Speaker Newt Gingrich way out front of fellow GOP-ers like Sen. John McCain and also finds moderates like former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner far ahead of libs like Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Here's the unusual thing about the Zogby poll released to Whispers: When questioning likely primary voters, only brief biographies and not names were given.

In other words, voters picked the one with the best experience. Without her name recognition working for her, Clinton came in a miserable sixth out of 10.

"It looks like the Democrats want to grab the middle," says Zogby, who says outside-the-beltway Democrats lean moderate.

Surprises on the GOP side: Harsh immigration critic Rep. Tom Tancredo ranks fourth, showing the power of the anti-immigrant issue.

Is the poll important? Big time. In 1999, Zogby's "blind bios" poll identified "maverick" McCain as a very attractive candidate in primary states long before he almost knocked off George W. Bush.

The Democratic order and percentage: Warner, 14.8; retired Gen. Wesley Clark, 14.2; Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold, 12.2; Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, 11.1; former Sen. John Edwards, 10.4; Clinton, 5.6; New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, 5.3; former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, 4.9; Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, 4.9; Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, 3; Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, 2.8.

The GOP rankings: Gingrich, 21.4; McCain, 13.3; former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 11.2; Tancredo, 9.9; Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, 6.1; Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, 5.8; Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, 5.6; Virginia Sen. George Allen, 4.9; Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback,4.3; Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 3.8; New York Gov. George Pataki, 2.8.

I agree. McCain or Rudy would wipe the floor with Hillary."

Probably true but I don't know if I could bring myself to vote for either one of them. At some point the lesser of two evils is pretty bad by itself. I think I might have to go third party if those are my choices.

Unless peace breaks out all over the world...slim and none.

Leadership abilities will trump everything else.

It'll be McCaine or Rudy.

If there were no good 3rd party candidate to vote for then I not vote for president given the choice of those two. I am done voting for Rhinos. Given the choice of either or either of them at this point...Then we are doomed.

What Republican, their right mind, would ever support Chuck Hagel?

I think the little issue of dumping your wife while she's in the hospital is a bit more telling. What a shame; such a wide ranging and brilliant mind and such an immature, uncaring selfish persona. He'd make a great Sec of State or other cabinet officer

The American populace, and the politicians, have become so civilized, we no longer have the "stuff" to protect ourselves from those that wish us harm, within our own borders. We look outside for enemies, when they are right here, right NOW.

Somehow I don't see Newt as a candidate who can win in November. His negatives have to be uber-high after his demonization by the 'Rats/MSM as Speaker (on the left), and his going soft on the 'Toon in the second term due to a suspected 'deal' allowing him to remain as Speaker after his 'ethics' hearings (on the right).

Note: The second part of the above sentence is speculation on my part, circumstantially supported by Newt's virtual disappearance from the public arena during his last years as sepaker.

Can you picture a GOP candidate more tailor-made than Newt for the 'Rats 'Culture of Corruption' BS?

I'll go out on a limb and say that, barring any major gaffes/health problems/revelations, the GOP nominee in 2008 is likely to be:

1. Rudy or 2. Romney.

Just don't see any 'red meat' conservatives out there who will be able to pull it off...and lets not even say "McCainiac"....he must be stopped at all costs because he is an unstable nut...

"Gingrich's record of shameful personal behavior is not going to win over the family values crowd."

You mean Newt's two divorces? Those who live in glass houses, as the saying goes...

Look, the reality is that, in this culture, divorce is almost becoming an inevitability.

Now if he had a loooooong record of cheating and lying, lying and cheating, rape allegations, harassment allegations....then that's different....

....then he just MIGHT BE elected President!! (sarcasm off)

Dude, I don't think there are any 'Rudybots' on FR...just a few realists, who don't want to see Hitlery win, making contingency plans....

"The fact that Tancredo is even mentioned on this poll snds chills down my back!"

Note to Tancredo-backers:

When even I see his name and go: "Tancre-WHO?", it tells you about all you need to know about his electability...OBTW, can ANY of you name me the last sitting House member elected to the Presidency? (NO GOOGLING).

I won't hold my breath on that one...

"What?! The family values crowd is what gets Republicans elected. Do you believe for a minute that if Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council pulled their support any Republican could win? That's exactly what would happen if Giuliani became the nominee. Family values are not confined to "the occasional moonbat." They are the driving force behind conservatism today."

That's been true since 1980, and is why Romney (after laying to rest their "Mormon" concerns) might be the best candidate....they best be careful, however, and this is why:

Giuliani has the ability, in my view, to win the nomination even with tepid support from this group...and if they piss him off and he wins in November, well, they might get what they asked for...

They would be well-advised to keep "The Eleventh Commandment" of Ronald Reagan in mind during the primary - as would most of us...(McCain is not a Republican, before anyone brings that one up...)

"My only concern about Mike is if he has the foreign policy skills. He's done a great job as gov. Mike's done an easily demonstrably MUCH better job than Bill did."

Have ye lost yer mind? Mike is the ultimate health nazi. Since the boy lost weight all we hear from him is nag, nag nag about how fat we are, get out and run, don't smoke etc etc etc. The schools are worse than they were when he took office. The only good thing he's done, right off the top of my head, is kid insurance. I'll be glad to see the back of him.

"I think the little issue of dumping your wife while she's in the hospital is a bit more telling."

Were you there? Do you actually know what happened?

I wasn't, so I won't comment except to note that after the first two, Newt finally seems to have gotten his head screwed on straight with wife #3 (either that or he finally got a pair of eyeglasses that were the correct prescription....)

I just got called regarding a poll for the state of NJ.

Interesting the first question they asked me WAS, "Many people claim that they did not get the chance to vote in the 2000 and the 2004 election. Where you in any way prevented from voting???

I laughed at them and said, you must be kidding.

"Gingrich's record of shameful personal behavior is not going to win over the family values crowd."

I don't care if Gingrich was caught on video trying to extort a bravo juliet from a legless whore. He is the brightest, most historically knowledgeable and without peer whenit comes to the ability to articulate and mobilize the body politic. While we all like GWB the man, he is no communicator when the times are calling for just that.
