What's Moore up to this time?

Helmer screens 'Slacker' at Toronto fest

By STEVEN ZEITCHIK

Could it be another election season dominated by Michael Moore? Filmmaker appears to be greasing the wheels for a hush-hush project called "The Great '04 Slacker Uprising," screening portions of the work for the first time at the Toronto Film Festival next month.

Little is known about the pic, for which the director shot his 60-city student tour to college campuses and other venues ahead of the 2004 presidential election, documenting what fest literature calls the "the birth of a new political generation."

While there had been rumors that some of the events were filmed, there'd no word of an actual pic. Festival calls "Uprising" a work-in-progress, and a fest blog goes further and describes it as a "scrappy road trip movie."

Word of the appearance has raised the possibility that, like "Fahrenheit 9/11," movie could be a late entry to theaters with the aim of swaying sentiment before elections.

Either way, after months of quiet, the Michael Moore industry --supporters and detractors equally dependent on the filmmaker's outspokenness -- are back in business.

And it's turning out to be big business.

Fest will also be the first place the public can see footage of "Sicko," Moore's expose of the health-care industry which aims to pick up where Hillary Clinton left off in 1994, according to Moore's recent comments at his own film fest.

Segs are likely to be shorter than those for "Uprising." A fest announcement said they amounted only to a "teaser," and reps for both Toronto and the Weinstein Co., which is slated to release "Sicko" next year, declined to elaborate on whether that meant it would be more than a trailer. TWC also declined comment on "Uprising."

Moore will make an appearance at the festival in conjunction with the screenings as part of the "Mavericks" series, which will also feature John Waters and John Cameron Mitchell.

Toronto fest won't release the schedule for Moore's appearance until next week, but insiders said it's likely to get a prominent spot, which could turn the event into a political uprising all its own.

I'm certain it will be as "accurate" as his previous efforts.

Somebody on our side should be doing this. Making a "documentary" timed just for the election season, on some hot issue, like how the Democrats consistently fail the US military whenever they get into power. (Just an example that comes to mind. I'm sure there's better.)

There have been several, just can't get any distribution deals.

Yeah because Moore goes after Bush. Big target generates big interest.

In response, you can't go after Moore. He might be a big a-hole but he's not a big target.

Our side has to target the Dem party, not some fat slob who targets Bush.

I don't think there is a snowball's chance in Hell in getting a distribution deal if you target a Dem.

I don't think we necessarily need long features. 5-10 minute long items done in satirical, yet truthful, way would do the trick to illustrate the absurdity of the liberal position.

If Rush Limbaugh put his creative talents and wanted to get this done, he has proven he has the satirical "chops" to pull this off. Him and Paul Shanklin (the singer/songwriter) should take this on. It could be an Internet viral thing and Brit Hume could show teasers at the end of the news once a week, like Jib-Jab stuff.

Don't worry - we've been assured that Colleges are fair and balanced. I'm sure that his film will reflect the great diversity of left wing opinion and voters. :)

(/sarcasm)

Ok just knowing about this guy, I'll take a total guess about the movie.

He gets a bunch of interviews with slovenly slackers, mostly shaggy liberals, and of course a few right leaning (to lampoon)... Anyone from the right will be taken out of context ,or be shown maybe with more enthusiasm than facts.

All lefties of course will be above question.

Then he proceeds to manipulate the questions and information allowing him to show that even slacking libs, that hardly pay attention know more about whats going on than Bush and company. Of course it will have a major tie to the internet, and how you can fund raise from your college dorm.

Throw in some proud lib trolling on sites like this, and UNIQUE general college hijinxs ..all good for the uninformed adults in the world. Pretty much the whole kids know better than adults crap, and I think you have the movie.....Oh yeah expect scenes of disbelief from Mt. Moore over then genius of his little anarchists ....

This hate politics is hurting people and teaching kids the wrong values. Look at the news and see one side trying to win the out shouting contest. I never saw men or women act like this. I believe it teaches kids disrespect for authority and any authority figures. The attack and hate politics has driven many a good man and woman away from even running for office. How many have no skeletons in their closet? It is almost like those who have never made a real decision in their lives are running now. Find that middle of the road man or woman, who never upset anyone, and give him or her the party talking points.

And Moore is a real disgrace to this country.
