Life and Death

The simple back-and-forth of war can create the illusion that both sides have a legitimate point to make even when this is not so, and it is clear that Hezbollah's cause has greatly benefited from war's "equalizing" effect. This Shiite militia seems to have known that merely fighting Israel would gain legitimacy for its cause. A cease-fire would make it a "partner" in peace. The Goliath Israeli military would make it a David whose passion proved the truth of its cause. But amid all the drama of this war there has been very little talk of exactly what Hezbollah's cause is.

...

But white guilt's most dangerous suppression is to keep from discussion the most conspicuous reality in the Middle East: that the Islamic world long ago fell out of history. Islamic extremism is the saber-rattling of an inferiority complex. America has done a good thing in launching democracy as a new ideal in this region. Here is the possibility--if still quite remote--for the Islamic world to seek power through contribution rather than through menace.

MONEY QUOTE: "Over and over, white guilt turns the disparity in development between Israel and her neighbors into a case of Western bigotry. This despite the fact that Islamic extremism is the most explicit and dangerous expression of human bigotry since the Nazi era. Israel's historical contradiction, her torture, is to be a Western nation whose efforts to survive trap her in the moral mazes of white guilt. Its national defense will forever be white aggression."

I read this in the WSJ last week and sent it out to friends. This guy is brilliant, and a terrific writer. Thanks for posting.

My pleasure to post it. The Gramscian damage that has been done to our society must be reversed. The Soviet inspired (sometimes funded, too) media campaign weakened our culture and we must recover and grow strong, indeed proud of our accomplishments and powers.

Pride is a sin.

Shelby Steele's analysis is correct. I add only one point which in fact he alluded to, but due length considerations perhaps could not elucidate more.

Here is the possibility--if still quite remote--for the Islamic world to seek power through contribution rather than through menace.

We see it here in America. "Victims". The victimization of America. "I can't work because I'm an oppressed "minority". "I can't be an average Joe, because I'm female and I'm still fighting a war against men that never was."

And, lastly: "I'm a liberal activist (gay, socialist, anti-Bush, anti-war, ad nauseum) and because I do not wish to remain obscure -- "I do not wish to simply be human. I demand to be considered "superhuman". Above everyone else. If I have to be an average Joe, this means I'm a "nobody". The Jihad mentality is not a whole lot different, and in fact, Mr. Steele's main theme does in fact address this. Imagine for a moment were there preferential "affirmative action" in place for Jihad fighters. Let's imagine for a moment, what the criterion for selection would be.

Do you love yourself MORE than your family and neighbors? Do you love yourself sufficient to "commit suicide on the crossplates of an open city". "Do you hang out with thieves"?

And people wonder why there's so much anti-Christianity running amuck in America. It's a "preferential affirmation action" maneuever to support a religion, Jihad/Islam, which has lost out on mass appeal stemming from the economies and civility wrought forward by that particular "belief set".

Mr. Steele is wise to refer to this as "white guilt". But in fact, it goes far deeper.

And herein lies the answer as to why the left hates us. And has to steal by subterfuge our freedoms and our beliefs. And gets frustrated that it still can't win elections on the "common market". The next step in such thwarted thinking is to "murder" "belittle" "slime" "terrorize" those who have winning ideas.

I loved the song "Jesus loves the little children" when I was a child, and because it was a true-ism. Years later, women demanded the right to murder their unborn.

But yet, it still remains that Jesus loves the little children. And there are those who are still angry that the words to the song still remain true, no matter how hard they've tried to abolish this "true thing".

Come on now...I did not call you any names...and you should not be proud of anything...as I said, pride is a sin. However, you should be honored in your accomplishments. Big difference.

Oh, and by the way, there are no such things as trolls on a public posting thread.

Exactly.

"Pride is a sin."

Not if you place the glory in the right place.

The Author needs to leave his Ivory Tower and visit Al Khobar and Riyadh and Jubail. Then he should spend some time in Qatar and Dubai.

He would learn how wrong he is.

From your profile:
Better to be called an idiot from the stool of a fool than to be known as one in the eyes of the wise.

Take that 'troll' comment under that advice. And if I remember the NT correctly, it agreed with you about pride being a sin.
