The University of Colorado student union voted Thursday in support of firing tenured ethnic studies professor Ward Churchill.
The union's legislative council voted 9-6 in favor of a resolution supporting former Interim Chancellor Phil DiStefano's recommendation to fire Churchill for plagiarism and research misconduct.
The resolution will be sent to the student government's tri-executives and will go into effect if two of the three student leaders sign it.
"This is not a problem that is attached to the entire ethnic studies department just a not-so-good professor and he doesn't deserve to be employed here," ...
"He takes away from the value of our degree."
Churchill drew national attention over an essay that compared some Sept. 11 victims to a notorious Nazi.
A subsequent investigation into Churchill's work found that he committed serious, repeated and deliberate research misconduct, prompting the chancellor's recommendation that he be fired.
Churchill, who denies any wrongdoing, is expected to have a hearing this fall before the school's Privilege and Tenure Committee, which will re-evaluate DiStefano's recommendation.

They must do the same themselves, too ?
In the world of tenure, plagiarism is the only thing that will get him. Everything else is forgivable.
It's to aloleviate the guilt felt by liberals who need to have relief from the feeling that the US gets away with all the evil.
And lastly, it provides a carre of teaching ethnic studies to subsequent classes so that future generations will be able to experience the angst.
Now, how do I sign up for spelling?
What guilt? FTB, with "T" standing for "the" or "them". As I like to say, those who want to send me on a guilt trip will have to pay first-class fare, round-trip.
My friend's daughter has a PhD from Yale in Chinese Studies. She was offered jobes by several agencies, a sh--pot of companies, and Yale. I don't know what good these other departments provide except feel-goodism.
Is fabricating scholarship ok at the Universities ?
Good professors don't get it because they don't publish enough while mediocre professors are tenured because they've written dozens of books and articles as well as brought the university millions of research dollars.
The only things I've ever heard of a professor at A&M being dismissed for are plagiarism except for one who was dismissed because he was convicted of several felonies and sent to prison. There is one professor who is known to sleep with his students (never been a complaint but it is the worst kept secret on campus) but he is tops in his field and brings in tens of millions in research dollars every year so the administration conveniently look the other way.
Yeah, right. The *only* value is to that of racists, feel good education, and similar government jobs programs.
Real anthropologists probably wouldn't have any thing to do with these students.
They'll be more comfortable in the Sociology/Education departments where they can continue to study
how to screw up society, culture, and real peoples' lives without being held accountable or responsible.
Did you see that Ward is not only claiming credit for other professors' written scholarship, but also copied other artists art work ?
He then sold some of the stuff on ebay and sold some copied art work directly. He got in trouble with ebay thru the copied ebay stuff.
When another sale was questioned by the direct purchaser, Ward said that it was not Ward's fault that the buyer did not know the art work was a fake.
The guy is a cheat and liar, no doubt about it. It should be a lot easier to dismiss people like that.
There are reasons why the academy fosters garbage like this and continues to allow it to grow. I have a simple solution: No tenure for the humanities. There are pretty much zero standards for scholarship in these fields and I think we have indulged them for far too long.
Wow! "Enough" must be a really high bar, then.
And don't forget the numbers. Having an "ethnic studies" department pretty much guarantees that the number of minority professors goes up. Even if Churchill were the world's foremost white expert on Cherokee culture and was more well-regarded than anyone in the field, including actual Cherokee, CU would not give him a second look.
Similarly for "women's studies".
Oh, and it provides a major that idiots can take and graduate in.
Yeah, I think universities have to stop being for-profit institutions. The windfall they get from grants is really corrupting the academy in a profound way.
There should be no life time tenure for any of them.
Maybe give them 5 or 10 year contracts with escape clauses.
