Vote if you support Elvira Arellano **Barf Alert*
The Chicago Sun Times ^ | 26 August 2006 | Sue Ontiveros

The children and voting. To me, that's what Elvira Arellano's battle to stay in the United States should be all about. I'm glad her supporters are of the same opinion.

Since I first heard about Arellano, the undocumented worker who has taken sanctuary in Adalberto United Methodist Church to avoid deportation to Mexico, my prevailing question has been this: What about the rights of her 7-year-old son, Saul, who is an American citizen? We should be concerned about his rights. You start trampling on the rights of one citizen, and where does it end?

So I was glad to see that a petition is being filed in federal court to vacate her deportation.

Deporting her shouldn't be a problem even from her point of view - she'll just be back.

What's an illegal alien doing engaging in activism in the U.S., by the way? What happens to Americans, even in Mexico legally, when they practice political activism?

He has a right to be raised with his mother in the country in which she is a resident, and when he is 18 he has the right to decide where he will live. I think that about covers it.
However, this is the problem with the current reading of the 14th ammendment.

we should end anchor babies by making children of those in this country illegally, also illegal, just because she managed to break the law and sneak into the country doesn't mean we owe her or her children anything

Since I first heard about Arellano, the undocumented worker

You mean Arellano, the illegal alien?

What about the rights of her 7-year-old son, Saul, who is an American citizen?

What rights does he have that would be hurt by deporting an illegal alien?

A child will have to choose between mom and his country of birth, the United States.

That's terrible. The solution is to end automatic citizenship for children of non-citizens. Let's do that now, for the children.

These are American children who, just like Citizen Saul, worry every day that Mom or Dad or both parents will be plucked away from them just like that.

The same holds true for children of murderers, rapists, drunk drivers, armed robbers etc. It's cruel to throw criminals in jail if they have children. We need a "I have kids, I have a get out of jail free card" law.

Those who are eligible to vote and believe that this broken system of immigration should be fixed, here's your chance. Register. Vote. The elections in November are coming up. Let your voices be heard.

If this happened, the result may be the opposite of that wished for by this columnist.

End the illegal immigrant anchor baby system now.

Only those residing legally in this country who have children should have their children become instant citizens.

Many legal citizens get separated from their children when they break the law.... why should she be the exception?

I'm glad the feds don't plan to go in and get her but this will blow up in the face of the church and other churches. They'll have no one else to blame when they find themselves swammped with people trying to cheat immigration.

One down, 20 million to go, right Susie? What "rights" are you talking about anyway? What about my rights to have America's laws enforced? By the way. She is not a "citizen." She's just another, dime a dozen, loud mouthed, leftwing "activist" from Mexico. Deport her.

When I was in the D.A's office here in a New York County, we were required , by law, to represent the tribes in a variety of noncriminal matters, including the eviction, from reservations, of those who did not fulfill the requirements of tribal aw for residence.

In one case, a woman with a child from a previous marriage married a member of one of the tribes. Under tribal law, the mother could remain as the spouse of a recognized tribal member. The tribal council wanted the child evicted.

This is the flip side, but the solution is the same. Throw Mama off the reservation. The kid can either go with her, and return when he is of age, or go into foster care. End of story. The woman should not be allowed to break the law because of functioning ovaries.

when momma is deported again, he will either go with her or be left behind due to his "birthright". Absent a parent or other legitimate US Citizen as family, he can easily be accomodated and placed in foster care as a ward of the state.

What about the rights of her 7-year-old son, Saul, who is an American citizen?

What about Elian Gonzales who's mother died bringing him here to be with family, and was here LEGALLY as someone seeking asylum from a communist country?

Why is the ACLU behind this case? This is a clear case for the famous "separation clause". By allowing the illegal mother to seek asylum in a church the government is clearly endorsing that faith above others since no religious asylum is recognized by the Constitution.

This church should lose it's tax exempt status. The same goes for mosques which shield terrorists.
