Five body cues to know if a guy is lying to you
MCT ^ | Saturday, August 26, 2006 | Kate White

Sometimes we just know when a guy is playing us. He's feeling so sheepish it shows on his face, or else you've heard enough variations on his line to know it lacks any authenticity (such as when he says "I didn't even notice her").

On other occasions, though, it's not nearly as apparent. Perhaps he's had time to sturdy himself, to practice looking sincere or indignant. You may sense something's wrong but not know what. I'm happy to report that, according to body language experts, there are subtle indications that a man (or a woman, too, for that matter) is fibbing.

1. He folds his arms across his chest or crosses his legs or ankles. This is a protective move triggered by any discomfort he feels. Also, he's subconsciously closing himself off. It's as if he's telling you, "Don't trust a word I'm saying."

2. He rubs the outside corner of his eye with his finger. Even a good liar can have a hard time looking you in the eye when he's saying an untruth. By fiddling with his eye or the skin around it, he's doing his best to break eye contact.

3. He tugs at his ear. Subconsciously the liar uses hand gestures as a distraction. You're forced to notice what he's doing with his hand rather than focus on his words.

4. He rubs his finger up and down the side of his nose. It's thought that nose rubbing is an unconscious effort to block the untruthful message emanating from the mouth.

Another theory: when a person lies, he's uncomfortable and his pulse is pounding. Blood rushes to the face, causing both the nose and the ears to feel itchy. This can result in an urge to scratch them.

5. He bites his lower lip. Another subconscious protective device. It's as if he's fighting the urge to totally fess up.

Guys know this. It's all learned at our earliest poker games when we are like 15 or 16.

klinton's red nose is probably as much due to his cocaine abuse as it is from lying.

I don't think that BJ Clinton, or his wife, feel any uncomfortableness in lying. To them, it is just as natural as breathing. They could probably pass a polygraph test while lying; it is that natural for them to do.

You remember that famous picture of Rather during Rathergate, where it shows him scratching beneath his eye (the one that people later Photoshopped to give him a black eye?)

I definitely don't agree with this.

I rub my nose all the time and have a tendency to fold my arms. This does not mean that I'm lying.

Yeah me too. My position is I'm just uncomfortable with talking to people entirely. In person.
