Hammond Students Were Wearing Inappropriate Clothes

(AP) HAMMOND, IN -- Classrooms were a little less crowded at Morton High School on the first day of classes: One hundred and twenty-eight students were sent home for wearing the wrong clothes.

Fed up with inappropriate outfits, the principal suspended the students for one day Wednesday, minutes after doors opened at the school. Those suspended represent more than 10 percent of the 1,200 total students.

The offending attire -- including baggy pants, low-cut shirts, tank tops and graphic T-shirts -- are banned from classrooms. Students were also cited for cell phone use.

"This was the worst year I've seen in a long time," said Principal Theresa Mayerik. "It's gotten out of control, and we needed to send a message that we're not messing around."

The Hammond school usually has 20 dress code violations a day.

Mayerik said the infraction would be removed from students' records in 12 weeks if they had no other in-school violations.

School board members said they support Mayerik and the mass suspensions. "I'd be supportive if half the school was sent home, because 99 percent will get the message our schools are for education," board president Rebecca Ward said.

Good for her, I hope they keep doing it every day. I dropped my daughter off at her first day of HS Wednesday and even an old fart like me was blushing by the time I got out of the parking lot.

I cant even believe school would start before Jerry songs "You'll Never Walk Alone". Terrible. How un-American

Wow, now that's my kind of Principal.

Hope she ignores squawking parents too.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com i remember a thing called a "Student Handbook" that spelled out everything in chapter and verse about what was expected of you to do and NOT to do in school.

I don't get it in a million years. The hottest, most sultry summer in recent history and yet I commonly see guys wearing two or three pairs of pants! Plus sweatshirts with the hoods up. Mercy I don't know how they do it.

Good for Principal Mayerik, when I was in high school I think all principals were like her.

Bring back school uniforms!

My daughter's high school just this year instituted uniforms for PE. Up until now they've been wearing whatever ghastly thing they wanted. Most of it was absolutely appalling.

Maybe they missed the memo. They were suppose to wear Soviet uniforms.
Don't worry too much about it, though. It'll be the parents fault for not following orders. The kids will get off.

Waaay back in 1958 we got ent home for wearing our collars turned up like Elvis and wearing "Engineer boots".

The boots left black marks on the floor, but I could never figure what was wrong with turning you collar up.

Our middle school tried to institute school uniforms. Parents would have none of it. Better that we see their daughters' bellybuttons, cleavage, underwear [boys too on this one]. Sad situation.

While I support the effort, I doubt wholeheartedly that 99% of the students will get the message. They may comply but the message will be subject to teenage interpretation.

i've seen the acceptable attire sections in h.s., m.s., and
elementary handbooks. its very clear what is and is not
allowed. yet, there are student ... and staff ... violators

... they are all sent home to change into more appropriate
clothing...

Bring back school uniforms!

I think everyone should wear uniforms. Save a lot on the clothing budget and reduces competition based on who can afford the latest doodads. I went to Catholic school and of course we had uniforms. To this day I have a fear of navy blue...

We also had a principal who dragged a girl out of the hallway and washed the makeup right off of her face. And another nun who whacked girls with a yardstick if their skirts were above the knee. Good times!

LOL! I don't blame you. My stepfather told me about the nuns...

It's awful.

My stedaughter went though her "the world must see my navel" phase, but she dresses tastefully now compared with her classmates.

She's on her own for school shopping this year (she's 17), but she only gets reimbursed for clothes that are "school appropriate". And since we gave her a limited budget for shopping, she's discovered the joys of Walmart and Ross (stores she wouldn't be caught dead in last year).

Styles, at least for women and girls, have changed signficantly this season. No more low, low cut jeans with a thong hanging out, no more belly shirts, etc. It's nice. Actually now t-shirts are cut much longer and mini-skirts are worn with tights or leggings (UGH!) under them. It's a nice change from the past few seasons.

Funny, many girls here in WV haven't picked up on it and still wear belly shirts, low, low riders, and bare mini-skirts. It's funny because they strut around thinking they're hot stuff, when in fact, they're just completely out of touch with what's in style, and more important, what's appropriate.
