I live in Overland Park, #6, but the city directly next door, Prairie Village, is a MUCH better and more conservative city.
She got her degree in physics, but alas decided against grad school. Said her brain was overflowing!
Speaking of teardowns, my old family home in Hinsdale was demolished two years ago in spite of being a landmark home in the best neighborhood, brick tudor, six staggered stories, 4 bd/3-1/2 bath, gorgeous brick driveway entering between two tall brick posts with carriage lights, totally fenced with spectacular 6-foot-tall cast iron like they don't make any more. Swimming pool, Terrazo marble floors/pecky cypress walls in rec room, all kinds of special and wonderful features. A classic roaring twenties home most people would kill to own. Some @#$@#$ creep paid a million and tore it down, to be replaced by some gaudy glitzy THING.
I'm still in shock.
I've not been up to Los Alamos in about two or more years but it is a nice area. When visiting the Pajarito Plateau you can see why the government picked it for security in the 1940s.
I refer to Hinsdale, IL as "Tyvek town". There are so many huge homes being built where the old houses were torn down...before the bricks go over the insulation panels, you see the Tyvek labeling.
Luckily she has her dad's brains.
We lived in #4 Columbia/Ellicott City until 8 months ago and high tailed it out of there for the North Carolina mountains....we love our new place because our county strongly reflects the Anglo-European Judeo-Christian culture of the old America....the one that the ACLU hates....I just got my NC concealed carry permit....try doing that in the Disarmed People's Republic of Maryland....the best thing that happened to us when we lived in Columbia/Ellicott City was the rapid price appreciation we got on our farm....that enabled us to cash out and head for the hills...
Ok, how would FReepers rate San Antonio? We might be talking ourselves into bailing from So. Calif., and S.A. is an area of interest. I know Texans probably cringe to see Californians checking out their cities, but would appreciate any general observations.
ROFL. I know some people who just left Boise because it was too conservative and they just couldn't stand it.
Makes me laugh every time I think about it.
That has to be one of the three great conservative events of my lifetime. I didn't go, but I LOVED it. Wish we could get that kind of enthusiasm again.
I'd be interested in seeing current "best places" for retirement.
Pittsburgh, if you can't
Interesting....bump to read later
Maybe on topic, or off, but... when researching retirement places, I stumbled on to the site, "100 Least Diverse Cities" in America. I want to live where only English is spoken. (OK if you call me a bigot because I know I'm not. I just happen to think people who survive by being on the American gravy train ought to speak English.)
So I found the county where each town is. I found the counties on CNN's 2004 Election results site. Most of the "least diverse" areas went for Kerry. Not positive what it means (it might mean nothing), but I'm assuming it's a NIMBY thing; the libs talk the diversity talk, but sure don't want to live where diversity exists.
Any other thoughts as to why this is?
Cary, NC, a bedroom suburb of Raleigh, is nice but it has bad traffic.
Why not West Virginia?
I thought West Virginia was incredibly beautiful when I drove through part of it to Baltimore last year.
I am aware of the reputation for..well....less than intelligent people living there....but what is your reasoning seeing you are from there I think?
A friend of mine lived in Cary and had slogans for it
Cary NC...because you love waiting in your car.
Cary....When you are in your car, no one can hear you scream
Cary.... a traffic jam in every cul-de-sac
Cary....Just because you can see it, that doesn't mean you can get there
The only place I have direct knowledge of is Cary, NC. (I lived in Raleigh for 20 years and still have family in Cary.) If Cary is #5, I'm not that impressed with the list. I like where I am better, but I'd rather people discover it for themselves rather than read it from a list.
According to your profile:
"The best place on earth to live. I have lived in nine states and this one is the best. Here I will stay."
Ah ha.....you must be sarcastic.
I have wanted to live in WV for awhile. You trying to keep people away? :)
