The third week in August found three would-be 2008 GOP nominees campaigning for contributions and friends in Orange County, Calif.: Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, his Virginia colleague George Allen, and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Each has a following, and each brings significant advantages to a race that includes two other top-tier candidates, former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani and of course Sen. John McCain, a frontrunner in media eyes but perhaps last in the love of his party's faithful.
Amid a gaggle of events and gatherings one stood out: a Romney event on Aug. 18 at a coast resort. Nearly 1,000 people showed up and Romney's CommonwealthPac garnered more than $1 million. The locals were stunned: Where did that come from?
Romney's performance at the state's semi-annual GOP Convention in Century City on Aug. 20he received a rousing standing ovation following his keynote address and kudos as well from the arch-conservative California Republican Federationkept the political buzz mounting. One local congressman remarked that Romney "is the most gifted politician I've ever met."
Patient, persistent Bill Frist remains a compelling candidate in small groups, and he has a huge stage on which to work for another three months. Frist's VolPac is busy extending the same sort of assistance to Republicans that Romney is delivering, as are McCain and Giuliani. Frist is also the candidate best positioned to pick up faith-based voters uneasy with Romney's sincere Mormon commitment.

Hugh Hewitt MEGA-PING!
We all know the California GOP has lost its mind since Reagan. This is further proof.
This will be one UGLY presidential primary.
Romney is a very personable guy and I think people who think George Allen has this in the bag are deluded. Allen comes off as something of a poseur when you look into his background, and though he supports the President quite a bit, in reality substance isn't what wins out.
BTW, the "flip flops like Kerry" thing isn't as portable as some people seem to think. All politicians change their positions--ALL of them. Ronald Reagan on abortion, anybody? (Or Amnesty?)
Allen's implosion will only help Romney as McCain remains static in the polls and Giuliani remains strong...I'm figuring that by the beginning of '08 Allen will be a historical footnote and McCain will be a non-starter.
No thanks, no thanks, no thanks, no thanks and no thanks.
Enough of the clown show. Next? (please tell me there is a next)
Newt is on the move to run
Where is he going? Maybe someone could give him a lift. He is kind of heavy and I sure would not want to see him have a heart attack.
I don't know of a politician that I could vote for right now. They all have too many self serving agendas. They have lost touch with reality and the fact they are there to serve us.
Frist and Allen, OK.
Romney...dead in the water.
McCain & Giuliani -- I'll have to be drugged and carried to the polling booth to vote for these miserable creatures...especially McCain who pretended the other day that the administration said the War on Terror would be fast and easy. That was a lie; and it goes in the bin of so many things that McCain has done wrong.
He will NOT get my primary vote. I'm at the point now that he will NOT get my general election vote. If it's McCain, then I might just stay home. I might just write in Dick Cheney. Who knows, but the stunt the other day here in Ohio did not help, it made it harder to get our candidates elected, and it was purely self-serving.
Condi!
Romney is pro abortion
Romney is anti- gun
***...especially McCain who pretended the other day that the administration said the War on Terror would be fast and easy. That was a lie;..>****
I agree. Right after 9/11 the President said it would take a LONG time to fight the terrorists. No one could have made it plainer. And he has said it for the last five years, repeatedly. It doesn't matter WHAT the President says, the MSM will not give him adequate coverage. Then liars like McCain take advantage.
I would support Newt. But I think a majority of the country would not.
I would support Condi, but many in some southern states would not simply because she is Black and others wouldn't back her because she's female. Stupid reasons, but they stand nonetheless. In my opinion, she would have less a chance at winning than Newt would.
That's like saying, "I wouldn't like where he would lead this country, but he'd be good at leading it there."
At that point, it's time for a reassessment.
Clearly you've never been to virginia. There are plenty of people who walk around in boots and a cowboy hat out there. Don't forget, allen's had his cowboy style since 1980, long before it was bush was even doing it.
Romney comes off as a boston brahmin. Given the choice between a boston brahmin and a cowboy, i think we all know which one the gop voters will pick.
