THE US is investigating whether Israel violated US rules in its use of US-made rockets armed with cluster bombs in Lebanon, the State Department said today.
"We have heard the allegations they were used and we are taking a look at that," said State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos.
He was responding to questions about an article in Friday's New York Times which said the State Department's Office of Defence Trade Controls opened the probe this week after reports that three types of American cluster bombs were discovered in southern Lebanon and were responsible for civilian deaths.
"Once we have determined that (cluster bombs were used), we will look to see how they were used and who were the targets," Mr Gallegos said.
He said the investigation began after nongovernmental organisations on the ground informed the State Department of the use of cluster bombs on civilians.
"We take it seriously of course and we are looking at the veracity of the claims," he said.

Time to alter the words to Napalm Sticks to Kids for 21st century warfare?
According to sources on the ground, the use of these incendiary devices has resulted in the deaths of tens - if not hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians during the recent campaign by the American military, which, having now invaded Germany, is presently seeking to use its weapons to force Chancellor Hitler to end the war on terms acceptable to the Allies. But critics say...
Great question.
I'm sure the international human rights groups are looking into this as I type. (/sarcasm)
They ran out of firecrackers?
What is more effective than a cluster bomb?
Two cluster bombs.
How bout investigating and irradicating the 300 rockets fired into civilian Israeli areas. That migh tbe a just investigation don't you think?
And a MOAB chaser.
This is the same tired claim made by these folks. If I remember correctly, these weapons were supplied to Israel for self defense purposes and that is exactly what they were used for. The state department has already created enough problems in the middle east, they should butt out of Israel's affairs.
they didn't use enough . In fact they should drop it onto the kapo Sulzbergers
I'm thinking that the rest of the world is lucky that me and you are not in charge.
:)
I hate to be a nit-picker but "cluster bombs" are gravity bombs which are dropped from airplanes. Rockets are individual munitions which may be fired from an airplane or from ground launchers and for the most part have high explosive or shaped charge warheads. I've seen cruise missiles carrying sub-munitions which act in a manner similar to a cluster bomb, but I have never heard of a rocket propelled cluster bomb.

You should see the wound made by .223.:-))
If I remember correctly, it was cluster bombs that were dropped on a major Balkan city (populated by civilians), from U. S. bombers flying safely above the range of SAMs as part of Pres. Clinton's NATO-endorsed military excursion against a country that had not attacked the U. S., a "defensive" reaction against no credible threat to the security interests of the U.S.
When were cluster bomb outlawed anyway? Was it during Carter or Clinton?
