THE US is investigating whether Israel violated US rules in its use of US-made rockets armed with cluster bombs in Lebanon, the State Department said today.
"We have heard the allegations they were used and we are taking a look at that," said State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos.
He was responding to questions about an article in Friday's New York Times which said the State Department's Office of Defence Trade Controls opened the probe this week after reports that three types of American cluster bombs were discovered in southern Lebanon and were responsible for civilian deaths.
"Once we have determined that (cluster bombs were used), we will look to see how they were used and who were the targets," Mr Gallegos said.
He said the investigation began after nongovernmental organisations on the ground informed the State Department of the use of cluster bombs on civilians.
"We take it seriously of course and we are looking at the veracity of the claims," he said.

Apparently, the NYT expects that the pilot, 10,000 up in the air is expected to know if the bombs he is releasing will kill children. If not, he should abort the mission?

I would think if you found a rocket launcher site, cluster bombs would be the munition of choice to take out the missiles on the rails, the reloads nearby and the personnel operating the site. What's the HARM in that?

We have to go through this charade in order to keep the "moderate" muslim governments happy. Every President since Truman has done it. We are just used to Dubya actually standing up for Israel more than any other U.S. president.
Think of diplomacy as warfare by other means.
Iran investigates Hezbollah's use of rockets.
Iran is upset that Hezbollah has used the rockets they shipped them in violation of their agreement. "They managed to kill very few innocent women and children, despite the use of hundreds of rockets and despite a deliberate attempt to avoid military targets. If this continues we will have to ship them thousands more rockets, and will have to divert the proceeds of 2 hours of oil sales to handle the costs. This is an outrage. How can we accomplish slaughtering Jews at this rate?"
President needs to start making war on domestic enemies - first stop should be the NYT. The second stop should be the State Department.
