BANGOR, Maine -- A trans-Atlantic flight from Manchester, England, en route to Chicago was diverted to the Bangor International Airport on Friday, officials said.
American Airlines Flight 55, a Boeing 763, was diverted for security reasons, said Arlene Murray, New England regional spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration. She declined to elaborate.
Police confirmed that there was an incident at the airport but provided no details. Federal agents were at the airport, as well.
FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz declined to discuss the nature of the problem.
"We're responding to determine the cause of the diversion. It's going to take a number of hours for passengers to be interviewed," Marcinkiewicz said from Boston.
The Bangor airport is a popular place for international flights to touch down early due to mechanical problems, unruly passengers or security threats.
Bangor is the first large U.S. airport for incoming European flights, and it's the last U.S. airport for outgoing flights, providing a safety net for aircraft with uncluttered skies and one of the longest runways on the East Coast.

Is it just me, or are we averaging about one of these "incidents" per day?

Law enforcement officers were questioning the passenger after the jet landed at Will Rogers World Airport, said Morgan Durrant, a U.S. Airways spokesman. He did not disclose the nature of the problem between the passenger and the flight attendant. The Airbus A321, which left Phoenix at 6:15 a.m., was to resume its flight to Charlotte, Durrant said. What the hell is going on...there have been a rash of these lately.
What the heck?
The IslamoNazis are like 2-year-olds testing their limits.
My thoughts also...they know something ....or suspect something is coming.
There's nothing to see. Move along, sheeple.
Or, maybe, Mo'Nique is getting together with a bunch of her friends . . . |
In the middle of that four-martini lunch I see?
"What the hell is going on...there have been a rash of these lately."
My niece is on one of the transatlantic services, won't mention which airline, as a flight attendent and is getting really exhausted by the miserable, nasty, demanding and completely unreasonable passengers.
They take their anger out on the attendents who try to stay civil and pleasant at all times.
I wish she could retire and fast..
Yes...I think I know what is going on...
Somehow, I think the terrorists have devised a way to make these planes divert...but NOT have done anything worthy of jail..
I think they KNOW that if they do this often enough...and nothing, no bomb, no bomb carrying Muslims, are found...
Then the customers of the airlines are going to get tired of it..and complain...and the airlines will be more and more reluctant to divert and force an all over search..
And, THEN, when the airlines are back to their lackadaisical ways....THEN, they will pull one of their plans to take down 10-20 planes..
This is called Terrorism 101.
Ah yes, another weekend and Manchester in the news...

Maybe it's all just coincidence.
Hadn't heard about that one. I think flight crews are really on edge after the unveiling of the London based plot. I'm not criticizing them; I'd be the same way in their shoes. Just makes me glad I don't have any plans to fly for at least a few months. Hopefully things will settle down a bit by then.
Never heard of him.
