LTC Myers has a lot of points that need to be discussed in this article. We also need to force our elected leaders to discuss these and pass many of them or we will be in the position of wanting to be free and not having the tools.

From the equipment and modernization side, I think we are now feeling the results of Clinton's catastrophic military budget slashes.

The landpower of the United States is strategically vulnerable, fixed and committed to Iraq. The war in Iraq has cost billions in every piece of army hardware to the result that 70 of the Army is supporting the 30% deployed. Two thirds of the Army Total Forceactive, guard, and reserve are rated as not ready due to low equipment readiness. Well I guess you have to scream chicken little style hype and exaggerate to get anyones attention but the factual errors here are inexcusable for any self styled "expert" to be making.
Let us start with the obvious. We are 2/3s back 1/3 up since it is BASIC military strategy to keep a reserve. Out of 37 Army Combat Brigades only 12 are currently deployed EVERY where in the world. By the end of 2007 the force is to be expand to 43 brigades. We are NOT tied down in Iraq. Our whole posture is to be able to fight two Iraq style wars at the same time.
A draft would be an UTTER mistake for the US. Our current force is the best in the world because everyone chooses to be there. With the US Military currently hitting both it recruitment and retention rates for the expanding force it is utterly absurd to be screaming for a draft. Perhaps the good LTC can explain WHY retendition is running at 110% of quota?

Israel has the draft, I wasn't that impressed with their draftee army from what I saw.
That "Broken" US Army on the other hand continues to impress me. The writer has some valid points but the military has never been better trained and I am willing to say equipped than it is now at any point in it's history.

Drafting conscripts for military service is a BIG MISTAKE that plays directly into the hands of the leftists. Increase the budget? Yes. More C-17s? Very smart. How about backing up the teeth (fighting forces) with more civilian contractors who have military fighting skills when necessary?
