In a city outgunned by criminals on the street, the San Francisco police department may have missed its chance to upgrade its arsenal.
...
ABC7 reported Wednesday that San Francisco police are finding more and more assault weapons on the streets. The officers say they're outgunned and they want equal firepower, specifically the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
A lot of police departments already have them. Among them -- Berkeley, San Jose, Walnut Creek and even the CHP -- all because of a bank robbery shootout nine years ago.
...
Three years ago, the military donated 100 M-16's to the SFPD to be converted to AR-15 rifles.
Delagnes says because of indecision, the rifles were returned.
Gary Delagnes, San Francisco Police Officers' Association: "The police commission was obviously not of the mind or our officers to carry them so our department had to send them to other police departments."
Police Commission President Louise Renee doesn't recall the controversy. But she says the commission will consider Delagnes' proposal when he makes it.
Renee does say she does not want to escalate the firepower on the streets.
Louise Renee, Police Commission president: "One of the things that would concern me is that we would be in fact be adding to the flow of these weapons in the gun stream because somehow or other they seem to get siphoned off."
Although the swat team and specialized units of the SFPD do have the AR-15's, patrol officers carry only the standard 40-caliber sidearm and a shotgun in their cars.

So Renee you admit your department is corrupt? But that's not the problem it's the guns? Right. Something tells me SF is going to become so bad were just going to have to seal it off and firebomb the place.
It's really too bad because it is a beautiful city. Would be a near-perfect place except for the people who live there. I was over there this summer for the first time and was struck by the number of crazy people walking around on the streets. They would haggle you, harass you, and try to impede your walking. At one point, we saw a woman beating the shit out of a crazy person with her purse...not sure what was going on there, but there are a lot of crazy people around. A lot like DC, but I found it worse.
If I was SFPD, I would walk around some of those neighborhoods with no LESS than an AR-15.
"...the flow of these weapons in the gun stream..."
The gun stream? She must be high. What a moron.
>It's really too bad because it is a beautiful city.
It truly is.
I thought San Fran was an anti-gun utopia?
No, No...
You see, the gun stream is a tributary of the assault rifle river, which flows into Deadly Weapons Bay..
She is a woman of great wisdom...
Listen to her words and learn, grasshopper...
( sarc.. off...)
This is amazing!!!!
SFPD is about 10 years behind the curve on this.
Perhaps that Incompetent Administration would like the troops to simply throw pink hankies at the bad guys.
If the 'gun stream' were cut off or impeded, the polar ice caps would melt, polar bears would be forced into foraging in McDonald's dumpsters, and Christmas would be in July. You do NOT want to mess with the 'gun stream'. Especially in SF. God knows what would happen to all the crazy purse-beaters on the Day After Tomorrow.
At the SM County Fair last week I asked the three SFPD recruiters there, how the heck can they show up for their jobs day in and day out with no support from the city 'leaders'. They all looked blankly at me and said, there are nooo problems in SF with the city!
We all had a good laugh at that!
They would go through The Door Into Summer, and disappear Beyond The Sunset?
That is a distinct possibility. And diversity would suffer! Don't mess with the gun stream! SF cops should standardize on healing crystals.

LOL. There's a video game called "Grand Theft Auto" #?(I forget the sequel number) where you play a criminal in different cities. One of the cities is SF, and in that city, the police never fire on you or try to arrest, they just keep following you around and ask you to talk to them about your feeeeeelings.
It's truly hilarious!
In other words NFA weapons. Once a machine gun always a MG according to the ATF.
That is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. That is classic, I haven't played it yet, but I will now!
