Two of the girls stayed in the car while the other three started up the concrete walk to the Davis home. They didn’t get far before turning around.

Sheesh, if going up somebody's walk to ring their doorbell is trespassing, and that makes it okay to shoot them, then the Girl Scouts are going to have to start wearing body armor to sell cookies.

I strongly doubt these kids were staying on the walk. Either way, they're unauthorized people on his property *AFTER DARK* (that's the key part). He tried warning them off and that didn't work.
