MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee has been ranked by Forbes.com as "America's Drunkest City" on a list of 35 major metropolitan areas ranked for their drinking habits.
Forbes said Tuesday it used numbers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to rank cities in five areas: state laws, number of drinkers, number of heavy drinkers, number of binge drinkers and alcoholism.
Minneapolis-St. Paul was ranked second overall; followed by Columbus, Ohio; Boston; Austin, Texas; Chicago; Cleveland; Pittsburgh and then Philadelphia and Providence, R.I., in a tie for ninth.
Rick DeMeyer, 28, said Wednesday as he was celebrating his birthday at G-Daddy's BBC he could understand Milwaukee's ranking.
"I have had people stay with me from London and Chicago, and they can't get over how much we drink," he said. "I guess we do."
But officials at Visit Milwaukee, the area's convention and visitors bureau, contend that the city has come a long way in ridding itself of its beer-guzzling image.
Milwaukeeans have plenty of other ways to entertain themselves without drinking alcohol, said Dave Fantle, a spokesman for the group. He noted a new convention center and baseball park had been built and the Milwaukee Art Museum expanded in recent years.
"We've gone from Brew City to new city," he said.
It seems Freepers really like this story!

Really. Seems like some kind of screening software for multiple pings might be in order yes?
Isn't alcohal cheaper in Wisconson?
I would think whatever city Ted Kennedy happens to be in would automatically become the "drunkest city."
I read somewhere that in hell, you're dumped in a vat of all the alcohol you've ever spilled and forced to drink your way out.
Its probably due to the high Illegal alien population and their cheapo "Colt 45" malt.
"Marge, what time are we suppose to be at the Milarkee (burp) Art Mausoleum?"

I feel for Lake Michigan.
Only ONE Southern town on the top 10? I'm calling BS. :)
Pittsburgh at 8 and Tampa / St Pete at 25 BULL. I've lived in both. The tourists alone in St Pete should have us higher (pun intended) than that!
Reminds me of my days at Marquette University...
I especially remember Happy Hour on Friday afternoons/evenings, which consisted of 25-cent drafts of Miller at The Gym and 10-cent drafts of Old Style at Good Time Charlies.
Milwaukee was probably the drunkest city back then, too!
And if I hadn't quit drinking, I'm sure St Louis would have made the top ten.
Yes, but they're only listing major cities. The worst are those medium-sized college towns (50,000-250,000 people). And man do I love travelling to them.
True story. A group had a fund raiser at the Milwaukee Art Museum. It was an all you can drink Martini Bar for 30 bucks. Guess how THAT went.......
Coors never launched an entire product line named after the state Tampa is in. The makers of Keystone know where the beer drinkers are.

I read the title as "drunkenest." And, alas, I am sober.
