Butuan City, 23 August (AKI) - Security forces in the Philippines have found 10 sacks of ammonium nitrate, a chemical used in the manufacture of bombs, in southern Philippines. The authorities said on Wednesday they believe the Abu Sayyaf militant group - which the United States says has links to al-Qaeda - wanted to use the chemicals to make explosives. The find by the Filipino army comes just over a week after the seizure of 6,000 blasting caps from a person on board a ferry in the southern island of Jolo, according to a report by the Philippines News Agency (PNA).
The authorities also said that the blasting caps were similar to those used by the Abu Sayyaf in previous bombings in Zamboanga City and Jolo.
The PNA also quoted a military spokesperson as saying that the Filipino troops are still hunting down Abu Sayyaf members operating in the south as well as two leaders of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist group. The pair, identified as Umar Patek and Dulmatin are allegedly under the protection of the Abu Sayyaf leader, Khadaffy Janjalani, and believed to be linked to th 2002 Bali bomings which killed over 200 people in Indonesia.
The United States has offered a reward of up to 10 million for the capture of Dulmatin and one million dollars for the capture of Patek.
The military also said that an Abu Sayyaf commander, Otong Halipa Linungan, who had pending arrest warrants on kidnapping and illegal-detention charges, was killed early Tuesday morning in a gun-battle on the outskirts of Isabela City in Basilan province, 900 kilometres south of Manila.
Abu Sayyaf has been held responsible for deadly terrorist attacks in the Philippines as well as high-profile kidnappings of foreign nationals. The military has been conducting an offensive against Abu Sayyaf stronghold on Jolo since the beginning of August.

very good point
Just a few years ago I remember seeing pallets of the stuff stacked to the ceiling in barns, anyone could buy it. Now a few bags laying around and the FBI gets called.
I love a Moro Island Liberation Front story with a happy ending...
No link to Jews ... Plenty of links to mohammedanism ... no matter where they go, no matter what their ethnic or racial background, wherever there are mohammedans, there's trouble.
The "I" is for "Islamic".
You know: mohammedans. Bad guys. Lethal enemies of all that is decent in the world.
Oh, yes... They are Musselmen. I didn't think that was in the name. As long as it doesn't change their bitchin' acronym, it's OK with me!
al Qaeda is everywhere but never made it into Iraq
so says the democrats.
