JANESVILLE, Pa.--Until recently, Bob Casey Jr.'s strategy for unseating Republican Sen. Rick Santorum had been working so well that Mr. Casey could behave like the incumbent. Taking advantage of a double-digit lead in the polls, this son of a popular former two-term governor was coasting toward November on the heralded family name. He could remain mum or studiously vague about his actual positions. He could refuse to debate. And he could hide behind handlers who carefully stage-managed his appearances (before friendly audiences) and even more carefully shielded him from media outlets (like this one). It was a smart strategy for Mr. Casey, who is an underwhelming campaigner. But its viability is now being tested. The latest polls show the race tightening. An independent Quinnipiac University survey released on Aug. 15 had Mr. Casey ahead 48% to 42% among likely voters. The same poll showed him with a 52% to 34% lead in late June. A further concern for the challenger is that his negatives among likely voters have risen as he's allowed the senator to define him. Which might explain why Mr. Casey has begun to emerge from his shell.

Kind of like when Kerry said that W owned a lumber company.
W "I own a lumber company?"
Kerry "YESSS YOU OWN A LUMBER COMPANY"
I'm not familiar with that one! Can you expound on it?
Coming from a Pennsylvanian, I think this will be one hell of a race. The advantage in the debates goes to Rick- from what I've heard Casey is a lousy debater and is terrible at closing out campaings. it should be interesting.
I think W had some investments which included stock ownership in a number of different industries, and sKerry pushed it like he was the CEO, or something. It was so pathetic a stretch, that even one of the dems (customer) who was watching the debate with me let out a groan, afterward, when it was explained by one of the talking heads. I could have some of the details wrong...
Santorum by 5%. Take it to the bank.
I'm not familiar with that one! Can you expound on it?Yes. Please. It sounds amusing. When and where did Kerry accuse Bush of owning an lumber company?
Well, I've documented statements from the start stating I never believed he was down by double digits.
Just as I still will question anyone that says the Republican in N.J. is tied or even ahead at times in Jersey.
It doesn't compute with previous election results. And prior over confident predictions from people in N.J....
The real question is whether Santorum, who always has tiight re-relections at around 50-52% can do so again this year. The real question is whether he can grab that 4-5% that puts him with the majority win.
It was during one of the debates. I forget what the subject was but Kerry was insistant that W either owned a lumber company in Texas or was the major shareholder in a lumber company.
W got a strange look on his face like when you got really drunk the night before and went home with a girl and you can not remember her name...That kind of look.
W said that if he owned a lumber company it was the first he had ever heard of it. Kerry insisted that W did.
I guess that Kerry just figured everyone owned a lumber company. He owns three or four.
You misses a classic when Bush kick skerrys ass in the third debate
Clearly you live right down the road from me - I went to grad school there in the 80s.
also the classic line Do you wanna buy some wood?
The best part was when right after that, Bush looked at the audience, laughed and said "Wanna buy some wood ?". Kerry looked like the idiot that he is.
I am going through the debate transcript right now. Everytime I get to a Kerry line, the letters seems to spell out "blah blah blah blah", its tough going.
Now that's a grand description! ROFLMAO ;-P
I REMEMBER that line...
W looked at someone in the audience and said "Need some wood?"
It was priceless..
What was the reason that Kerry brought that up? I don't remember. Was it something about Canadian wood being imported into the US?
I am sure that Kerry thought that it would be the dagger into W's heart.
There was a move made about Kerry's campaign. That is one of the scenes from the sidelines and Kerry's handler was furious at J Forbes for saying something so stupid.
I don't remember exactly..some kind of ploy to suggest W was involved in something shifty in the environmental field I think..
I dunno...I am trying to forget about the gigolo and the nightmare that could have been if his drunken wife was first lady..
Problem is that J Forbes thinks he really is a serious contender in 08. He doesn't know that Hillary will cut him off at the knees.
