U.S. authorities have arrested a New York man for broadcasting Hezbollah television station al-Manar, which has been designated a terrorist entity by the U.S. Treasury Department, prosecutors said Thursday.
Javed Iqbal, 42, was arrested Wednesday because his Brooklyn-based company HDTV Ltd. was providing New York-area customers with the Hezbollah-operated channel, federal prosecutors said in a statement.
It did not say how long Iqbal's company had been providing satellite broadcasts of al-Manar, which the U.S. Treasury Department in March had designated as Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity, making it a crime to conduct business with al-Manar.
Iqbal has been charged with conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, the statement said. Federal authorities searched HDTV's Brooklyn office and Iqbal's Staten Island home, where Iqbal was suspected of maintaining satellite dishes, the statement said
The U.S. Treasury Department froze U.S. assets of al-Manar in March, saying it supported fund-raising and recruitment activities of Hezbollah, a Shiite Muslim group backed by Syria and Iran that has been at war with Israel in southern Lebanon.
You can make all the laws you want. Unless you're ready to enforce them, they're just words on a paper.
CAIR will get in on it as well.
The too, of course.
I think it depends on if it goes before a liberal or a conservative judge
The Egyptian Muslim guy in California who went to LAX and shot up the place a white back was addicted to these types of hate programs which he watched on his satellite TV (according to his immigrant neighbor).
One of the best things our government can do in our fight against terrorism, and something we citizens have no ability to do, is keep these types of TV stations from being viewed/aired. I'm not saying it will stop the really bad guys who conspire together, but the everyday Joe's, of which this California guy probably was, will not have the daily brainwashing of hate to knock them over the edge.
Something I do not understand: with all our technology, why don't we just shut these programs down wherever they are? Turn off the satellits if necessary, or whatever it takes.
Yep. The ACLU needs to be prosecuted and hard.
Hezbocrat.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that this person was (1) in the US illegally, and (2) a native of Pakistan. Call it a hunch.
Everyone can watch CNN and BBC, what they need Hezbollah TV for?
The New York Times?
I'm not so sure we should act like the Iranians who try to keep their citizens from listening/viewing western media sources. I came to this country because it stands for freedom. There's freedom of speech, and they're entitled to listening to whatever the heck they want.
The thing is that if we didn't let muslims and islamofascists get into this country, we wouldn't have to worry much about what kinds of programs they beam into our country via satelites. And the person who suggested "turning off the satelite" You're obviously not very bright. You don't turn off a satelite. Those things are in space and most of them are smaller than a car so they're practically invisible to us.
We hear all this talk about the "land of the free" and then we talk about starting to censor the airwaves. Doesn't sound exactly like "freedom" to me.
I believe there is a time and place for covert operations.
and with Christiane Amanpour as the hostess!
