NEW YORK -- The nude body of a one-time deputy press secretary for former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was found strangled in his apartment, authorities said Wednesday.
The Manhattan death of Martin Barreto, 49, was ruled a homicide after an autopsy found he died from "asphyxia due to compression of the neck," said medical examiner's office spokeswoman Ellen Borakove.
Police discovered Barreto's body Monday night on a bed at his home on East 10th Street after a friend reported he wasn't responding to phone calls or knocks on his door.
A doorman told investigators Barreto had told him he was expecting a visitor and instructed him to let him in. Police were searching for the visitor as a possible suspect.
There were no signs of a struggle or a robbery inside the home, where Barreto lived alone, police said.
Barreto, who worked at City Hall in the late 1990s, was a partner in a Manhattan public relations firm. He also was a former radio journalist who served on the board of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists from 1993 to 1996, according to the NAHJ's Web site.
"He was very energetic," said Dino Chiecchi, a past NAHJ board member who edits Hispanic publications for the San Antonio Express-News. "He cared deeply about the organization and its causes."
Giuliani spokeswoman Sunny Mindel said the former mayor wanted to express "his heartfelt sympathy and prayers to Martin's family and friends."

Former "deputy press secretary"? And how far down the echelon is that? How many former and present aids to Rudolph Giuliani are there? He’s been in politics for so long the list must be very very long making the odds of one or more of them meeting an unfortunate end is pretty good. This appears to be a headline tying to tie his name to suspicious foul play.
