Washington, D.C. In a letter today to President George W. Bush, Third District Representative Walter B. Jones (R-NC) expressed deep concern over the Justice Departments unacceptable prosecution of two U.S. Border Patrol agents for simply doing their jobs to protect our homeland.
Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean should have been commended by our government for their actions last year in attempting to apprehend a Mexican drug smuggler who brought nearly 800 pounds of marijuana across our border, Jones wrote. But because of an incomprehensible prosecution by the U.S. Attorneys Office including granting full immunity to the smuggler so he could testify against our agents these men now face 20-year prison sentences for firing shots at the fleeing smuggler, who they believed carried a gun. The smuggler who received complete medical care at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas is now suing the Border Patrol for $5 million for violating his civil rights!
The Justice Departments outrageous prosecution does nothing but tie the hands of our Border Patrol and prevent them from securing America against a flood of illegal immigrants, drugs, counterfeit goods and quite possibly, terrorists, Jones continued. This demoralizing prosecution puts the rights of illegal alien drug smugglers ahead of our homeland security and undermines the critical mission of better enforcing current immigration laws. These two agents should not be made scapegoats for our governments enforcement failures.
I am pleased that the House Judiciary Committee has recognized the need for a thorough review of this case by calling for Congressional hearings and an investigation of the Department of Homeland Security, Office of the Inspector General, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and the U.S. Attorneys Office, Jones wrote. In the meantime, I strongly urge your Administration and the Department of Justice to reopen the case against agents Ramos and Compean.
Mr. President, please assure the American people that those who commit crimes in our country will not be protected by the federal government, Jones concluded.

Thanks. I'll be offline a couple of weeks I think, so you can take me off until then. This is always interesting.
I hope you received prior clearance for your leave of absence.
I might be on weekend remote assignments though
Thanks for taking the time to collect this, and to create a ping list (leave me on!)
The following is from email today (excerpted):
---
From the Desk of: Steve Elliott, President Grassfire.org
8/23/06
We've just gotten confirmation from Ignacio Ramos's attorney Stephen Peters, that sentencing for the two U.S. Border Patrol officers has been postponed until September 18.
(snip)
++ 100,000 petitions arrive in El Paso!
Thanks to so many who have worked so diligently to rally support for agents Ramos, and Compean, Grassfire sent more than 100,000 petitions and personal comments to attorney Stephen Peters office as a strong show of grassroots support.
Peters urged Grassfire to continue rallying support for the agents over the next few weeks leading up to the new sentencing date on September 18, saying all the attention is very good. "Absolutely, keep them coming. I hope you send me 100,000 more!" he said.
Grassfire has already sent more than 100,000 petitions to the White House, and our successful Faxfire delivered thousands of faxes sent to key leaders in Congress and the Department of Homeland Defense which no doubt rattled some cages, as key leaders in Congress are now calling for an investigation of the case!
++Action Item #1--Alert Your Friends
Grassroots Americans are making a compelling impact on this issue, but we must remain vigilant in the days leading to the sentencing. That is why we are urging ALL who have signed our petition to forward this message to your friends, urging them to take action with you by signing our petition by clicking here:
http://www.grassfire.org/index.htm
Since sending 100,000 petitions to Mr. Peters office on Tuesday, more than 13,000 citizens have signed the petition!
bttt
Thank You for the ping.
Thanks for the ping.
Like I've stated before, this is an OPEN MESSAGE to the gutless jurors that convicted these fine border patrol agents for doing their jobs lawfully : I hope you gutless jurors enjoy your future enslavement in the New World Order, because you gutless bastards DESERVE TO BE ENSLAVED.
I hate to sound so harsh, but I stand by my opinion of "gutless cowards deserve tyranny".
OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the ping, BM! The conviction of these guys is systemic of the attitude concerning the border. They didn't follow the Admin's orders and paid the price.
The easiest way for the government to get out of this mess and to get those two hard-working agents back on the job is for President Bush to just issue them complete pardons, followed by Presidential Citations for shooting the drug smuggler.
I have only gotten 1 side of this story. If all they did was defend themselves, then how were they found guilty? What jury would convict them? What is the nature of all the evidence against them. This sounds like one of them 48 hours mystery shows on TV. They only give you enough info to persuade you to see things from their viewpoint. I am skeptical about this one...........
Hah! Don't count on it. They weren't convicted for stopping an illegal alien. The were convicted for interrupting the building of the "new America".
We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture. Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende. For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America. As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico. George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000. |
Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:
In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. My Bush Epiphany By Lawrence Auster
The Path to National Suicide by Lawrence Auster (1990)
I have not followed this story but, after reading the threads you posted I am appalled. Lordy, when are we going to take our country back and stop the insanity????? We will not be able to survive this nonsense.
Thanks
Thanks for the ping!
