Mayonnaise to me is bland very eggy rich and sickly whereas salad cream has a tangy sharp taste and does not taste rich at all.

The mayo I get is really tangy and sharp, so it may be that that is very similar to your salad cream. Different brands of mayo taste different on this side of the pond -- some are more bland, some more tangy.
