My mother's idea of salad when I was young was a plate full of lettuce, thinly sliced cucumber, tomatoes cut into wedges and salad cream drizzled over the top. If you were lucky she might put a few slices of hard boiled egg in with it.

Hence I did not like salad but have since learned that most people in Britain serve that with a slice of quiche or grated cheese or sliced cold meat.

Am I right in saying that to most Americans ham, cheese salad is actually the cheese and ham cut into cubes and mixed with dressing etc. Whereas if we said a meat or cheese salad it would be salad stuff such as lettuce, cumber, radishes, tomatoes etc etc served on a plate with slices of meat or cheese.

A favorite of mine is ham and cheese cubes combined with frozen peas that are thawed, noodles, and TA DA mayo.
