Okay, I'm all for hanging the American Flag - it's out on my front porch EVERY DAY since the 2000 election. And my daughter's in the military, so I'm totally behind any patriotic display...
but foreign flags are routinely used in Geography classrooms. ALWAYS HAVE BEEN since I can remember - and I remember back to the 1960s. This has everything to do with the class, and it better be in the curriculum - so why on EARTH would they suddenly decide to be "politically incorrect" NOW? Don't they have some "day of silence" lessons to go conduct, or a protest to attend, or something else equally liberal?
It's patently ridiculous that THIS is what they decide to enforce - it's a geography classroom, for cryin' out loud. As long as the American Flag is in the position of honor, I don't see any harm in hanging a row of foreign flags in a Geography classroom...

Strange story. I don't see anything wrong with hanging foreign flags in a geography classroom, either, but judging by the involvement of the ACLU, I suspect there's more going on here.

I suspect they had other problems with this teacher and used the "flags" to get rid of him on a technicality.

Same here. In my 3rd grade classroom (about 1972) there were two of the large floor stand mounted American flags in the front of the classroom. Hanging over the chalkboard were a couple of dozen small flags of different nations.
These days it's good to know what flags are being carried by America haters in our streets.

I have to agree. You can be against illegal immigration but still pro-information. It's good for kids to know what the flags are for countries that are constantly in the news.

I don't get it, either. One of my favorite classes in high school was geography, and the classroom had a number of flags displayed. Ever since hs, in fact, I have been a collector of foreign flags. The first one I ever got was a Soviet hammer and sickle, which I got in Moscow in 1986. Owning a Soviet flag didn't turn me commie, and sitting in a classroom full of foreign flags--with our flag in its proper place, always--didn't harm me, either.
What a stupid thing to fight over! Shame on that teacher, trying to do his job.

You must have missed this part ...
"...the principal looked at the curriculum, talked to the teacher, and found that there was really no curriculum coming up in the next few weeks that supported those flags being in the classroom"
