Yesterday was Aug. 22, the Islamic holiday that celebrates Muhammed's ascension to prophet status, and also, as some nail-chewing souls quaked, a day that Iranian-sponsored terrorists might unleash yet more destruction. Apocalypse, as it turns out, did not happen, but Tehran did issue its long-awaited response to the UN's demand that uranium enrichment programs be straightaway ceased. The reply, while its precise wording is yet unreported, is said to run more or less along the lines of, "Stuff it." Otherwise, Tehran announces itself open to "serious negotiations," and "dialogue." Immediately responds the European Union: "The document is extensive and requires a detailed and careful analysis." Well, no. It doesn't. What is expected of the Iranians is not dialogue. What is expected is compliance. There's nothing to negotiate. The UN was clear: Give up that uranium thing by Aug. 31, or - or -
Or what? By "clear," of course, we mean clear by UN standards. Should Iran definitely reject the demand - and it has already, of course, several times - then the Security Council will reconvene to discuss the possibility of sanctions. Or at least discuss the possibility of scheduling meetings to discuss the possibility of sanctions. Or at least discuss the possibility of discussing the possibility of scheduling meetings. Big truncheon that Security Council is swinging around. Iran must be just terrified.
Why does Iran behave as it does? Because it can, that's why. Russia and China aren't going to sign off on sanctions. And, meanwhile, Iran's atom plant will be running by year's end, as the Security Council goes on talking about taking meetings to discuss taking meetings.
So, speaking of clear: The U.S. and Israel and one or two other duly alarmed global parties have said it explicitly. They will under no circumstances permit Iran to become nuclear-capable. Well, that's tough talk. To date, mere tough talk hasn't accomplished much. Entirely untough talk really isn't getting the job done either. In schoolyard terms, Iran has planted a chip on its shoulder and is daring any and all comers to step forward and flip it off. "Requires a detailed and careful analysis" indeed.
Aug. 22 came. Apocalypse didn't hit. It has only been rescheduled.

Everybodies forgeting that on this day in 1187 ad, Saladin (the man Saddam's mentor) conquered Jerusalem back for Islam during the crusades.
The big Aug. 22 blitz didn't come off because the Brits caught them. This had to be a big embarrassment for Iran.
Along with Israel desrtoying much of their weaponry supplied to Hezbollah.
