12 ARRESTED IN US PLANE TURN BACK: DUTCH AGENCY

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch police arrested 12 passengers on a U.S. Northwest Airlines plane bound for India which was forced to turn back to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport on Wednesday, news agency ANP reported.

ANP quoted a police spokesman as saying 12 were arrested, but declined to give further details due to the ongoing investigation.

Police officials were not immediately available to comment.

The Dutch Defense Ministry said earlier the pilot decided to turn back after the crew said several of the 149 passengers on flight 42 to Mumbai were behaving suspiciously.

Security has been increased at airports worldwide in the last two weeks after British police said they had foiled a plot by British Muslims to blow up planes in the mid-Atlantic using liquid explosives disguised as drinks.

The Netherlands once ruled over what is Indonesia, IIRC (Dutch East Indies).

WHY would we give Syrians visas? It makes no sense. I don't trust the Feds when it comes to averted terror (unless THEY averted it).

An obvious reason why someone would target a NE to India flight is it would be filled with jet fuel. IF it was a terrorist (averted) act, then it may have had nothing to do with India.

Just as the 9/11 hijackers went after planes loaded with fuel...

" I don't understand the purpose of handing the cell phones to one guy unless the cell phones could be opened up and contained bomb making material.

Cell phone batteries can and do explode. They have been known to cause fire.

Is it possible that 12 batteries, put together as one unit, could start a fire that would be substantial and hard to control?

Must be a group of Calvinists.

No, they could never pass the profiling.

Mennonites or Amish. Had to be.

I believe that "South Asian" in BritSpeak means someone from the Middle East.

Not the entire Mid East, or really technically not the Mid East at all. Rather Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, and a few others.

They're getting a little modern. Their telephone service recently upgraded from smoke signals to string and tin cans.

Hopefully, no Amish will read this and get offended.

...but of course the thousands of cell phones purchased last week by Muslims in America is nothing - they just had a little side business going

Isn't that the lamest explanation you ever heard for why the Muslims were purchasing cell phones? Maybe MEasterners get some sort of sick satisfaction in making Westerners freak out when ME get in a group.

If you're anywhere near Anchorage, check out Frontier Airlines. They "hub" out of Denver, and they're showing GREAT prices for the Chicago-Denver loop these days. (We live in the Chicago area.)

I STILL think it is dishonest to call Arab Muslims "Asians".

Nobody is doing that. Pakistanis are not Arabs. Additionally there are Indian nationals who are Muslim. Both Indians and Pakistanis, plus Bangladeshis who are also mostly Muslim, are called "Asians" by the Brits.

There are 150 million Indian Muslims....

Whats your source for this nugget of Info?

CIA says that 13.4% of the 1,095,351,995 Indians are Muslim, which would be 146,777,167 Indian Muslims. Close enough to 150,000,000.

I don't understand the purpose of handing the cell phones to one guy unless the cell phones could be opened up and contained bomb making material.

That's good question unless they derived an explosive material or IED that can be improvised from these batteries.

Cellphone batteries contain lithium which can be highly flammable! I'm hardly an expert but, give me a dozen lithium batteries to work with and I am certain I could come up with a "problem".

BTW, remember Dell is currently recalling 4 million laptop batteries (lithium) due to numerous FIRES!
