SOME WEDNESDAY SPIN! Most in US see no tie between Iraq, terror war: poll Tue Aug 22, 10:29 PM ET A majority of Americans no longer see a link between the war in Iraq and Washington's broader anti-terrorism efforts despite President George W. Bush's insistence the two are intertwined, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll released on Tuesday. Fifty-one percent of those surveyed said the war in Iraq was separate from the U.S. government's war on terrorism. The findings were a considerable shift from polls taken in 2002 and early 2003, when a majority considered the two to be linked, The New York Times said. As recently as June, opinion was evenly split, with 41 percent on both sides of the divide. Now only 32 percent considered Iraq to be a major part of the fight against terrorism, the newspaper said. According to the poll, 46 percent said the Bush administration had concentrated too heavily on Iraq and not enough on terrorists elsewhere. Fifty-three percent said going to war in the first place was a mistake, up from 48 percent in July, The New York Times said. Bush's approval ratings remained unchanged at 36 percent. His popularity has been damaged by the unpopular war in Iraq, in which the U.S. military death toll is 2,610. As recently as Monday, Bush defended the invasion of Iraq as crucial to preventing more domestic terror attacks. "If you believe that the job of the federal government is to secure this country, it's really important for you to understand that success in Iraq is part of securing the country," Bush said during a news conference. The unpopularity of the Iraq war has many Republicans nervous about the party's chances in the November midterm elections in which Democrats are seeking to retake control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. The Times/CBS News poll of 1,206 adults was conducted Thursday through Monday and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

I wasn't aware that Admiral Stockdale had been a POW.

But his unsuitability for high office was apparent during those notorious VP debates.

I wonder how BJ feels, knowing that one bit of indecisiveness led to the murder of 3000 people.

Note to Marty the Caller, QUIT waiting for the day the Junk Media suddenly reports what you want to hear. They are your blood enemies, they are NEVER going to report good news about Iraq NO MATTER how much time he spends. President Bush gives dozens speechs or more a week. How many do you hear about?

YOU have to be your own jounralist these day, not sit on your butt whining for the President to come hold your hand. TURN off the Junk Media and their farudlent polls. Man Conservatives are stupid. This constant whining about PR. Well what do you expect when most of you go to the Junk Media for "news"? This habit is like going to Radio Berlin in 1943 to find out how the war is going. Turn them OFF. They are liars. Anyone who STILL takes NY Times/CBS serious as "News" needs some top level professional help.

Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale (December 23, 1923 – July 5, 2005) was one of the most highly decorated officers in the history of the United States Navy. Shot down over enemy territory in 1965, Stockdale was the highest ranking naval officer held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He was released in 1973. He was awarded 26 personal combat decorations, including the Medal of Honor and four Silver Stars.

Stockdale led the U.S. air squadron during the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Incident. During the late 1970s, he served as President of the Naval War College. Stockdale is also remembered as a Vice Presidential candidate in the 1992 election, on Ross Perot's independent ticket.

That poll is bogus. And most on that list are RINOs and not thepeople that will really be in the primary hunt. And half or more of the 30% that picked Giuliani are pro-life, oppose gay marriage, and are social conservatives, which most Republicans are, and Giuliani clearly is not. He's pro-choice and supports gay marriage. And would not put forward constructionist conservative Judges. Those positions put him in clear opposition to most Republicans. I mean, all the Republicans that rail on RINOs, but want Giuliani for President, well, GIULIANI IS a RINO!!! I like him and he was great on 9-11, but he represents the minority of thoughts among most Republican voters. When the rubber meets the road, and people have it put to them based on where the candidates stand on the primary issues, Giuliani will not be first. Contrary to all the hype relating to Giuliani, there IS more than the war going on, and while the war is most important clealy, and I've always said that, there ARE plenty of good likeable qualified REAL conservatives to run for President, who are just as strong and hawkish on the war as Giuliani. It's stupid for the GOP to forget about all the other important issues, just to have Giuliani for President, and if they do, they'll regret it. Most Republicans are so frustrated with so many RINOs in the Senate. Have they even thought about what it would be like having a RINO for President??? I don't think they have.

Rudy has the highest name recognition on this list with NONE of the negatives since he has never been a politicain outside NY State. Once he actually have to start taking positions on National Issues his negatives will go up.

His unsuitability was undeniable when he died last year.

Anyone see a problem here? If I know that the NYTimes is as slanted and as anti-American as it gets and I can't trust them to accurately report that the sun rose in the east this morning, and I know that SeeBS is the headquarters for "Fake but Accurate" 'news', why would anyone ever believe the results of any poll they conduct?

More important, that the law of unintended consequences stopped us from preventing it. The 'wall' was set up to stop info of the Clinton/China money for technology exchanges from getting to the public. Thus the prohibition of info exchange between CIA and FBI led to 9/11.

I doubt any conservative does....It is just self serving push polling to make NYT/CBS feel good, and feed their moonbat audience.

I hear the Rudy the RINO story all the time - all I know is the man is 100% pro-war-on-terror, and his ability to stand before an audience and speak as a leader is totally impressive.

I saw him in person last week in Greenville SC - at a leadership conference - and he was incredible - he absolutely owned the audience of over 10,000 people.

Rudy is not going to take away anyone's guns, he's not going to endorse gay marriage - and other social crap that gets hung around his neck.

Rudy knows the job of the President is national security and economic growth, and international credibility.

He is stong on every one.

He has my vote right now - let's see if he can hold it.

You might have a point there however, it's my opinion that he's just getting old and dottie. He should be ashamed of himself. I remember distinctly that Pres. Bush stated in his "State of The Union Address", that the war on terror was going to be a long hard war.

It's often said that the job of Mayor of NYC is second in difficulty only to that of POTUS.

interesting facts.. good to keep in mind. I hate ANY war deaths.. I get POd when told I LIKE war or POTUS LIKES war.

No one in their right mind LIKES war.. supporting the NEED for the war is NOT necessarily LIKING it.
