SOME WEDNESDAY SPIN! Most in US see no tie between Iraq, terror war: poll Tue Aug 22, 10:29 PM ET A majority of Americans no longer see a link between the war in Iraq and Washington's broader anti-terrorism efforts despite President George W. Bush's insistence the two are intertwined, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll released on Tuesday. Fifty-one percent of those surveyed said the war in Iraq was separate from the U.S. government's war on terrorism. The findings were a considerable shift from polls taken in 2002 and early 2003, when a majority considered the two to be linked, The New York Times said. As recently as June, opinion was evenly split, with 41 percent on both sides of the divide. Now only 32 percent considered Iraq to be a major part of the fight against terrorism, the newspaper said. According to the poll, 46 percent said the Bush administration had concentrated too heavily on Iraq and not enough on terrorists elsewhere. Fifty-three percent said going to war in the first place was a mistake, up from 48 percent in July, The New York Times said. Bush's approval ratings remained unchanged at 36 percent. His popularity has been damaged by the unpopular war in Iraq, in which the U.S. military death toll is 2,610. As recently as Monday, Bush defended the invasion of Iraq as crucial to preventing more domestic terror attacks. "If you believe that the job of the federal government is to secure this country, it's really important for you to understand that success in Iraq is part of securing the country," Bush said during a news conference. The unpopularity of the Iraq war has many Republicans nervous about the party's chances in the November midterm elections in which Democrats are seeking to retake control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. The Times/CBS News poll of 1,206 adults was conducted Thursday through Monday and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
Lieberman is all over the map... he's lucky both other candidates for that seat are horrid in their own way.
McCain and Rudy both lose my vote. If either get it, I will write in my own name. Clint, can I get your vote in that case, too? I'll make you part of the cabinet.
Me Too.
It is not win the war, OR hold fast on conservative social issues. This is now an either or, it's BOTH. For six years now the war has been fought, and at the same time, lines have been drawn on constructionist Judges, gay marriage, partial birth abortion, embryonic stem cell research, and other conservative social issues, and they are not mutually exclusive. The former is the battle to protect the physical being of the nation, the latter is the battle to protect the moral fabric that allowed the nation to be created. There is no reason to compromise on the social conservative half of the plank just to get a RINO who has the war right. That is ridiculous.
If the GOP does that, then it's no better than the Democrats, and I for one would have to consider who else to vote for. Because I have always said, I am a Republican until the GOP stops standing for it's plank and traditional conservative values that seperate them from the liberal Democrat party. If the GOP leaves me by embracing some socially liberal RINO like Giuliani, they leave my vote too. And I'm not the only one. If the GOP alienates the conservative base of tens of millions like me by forgetting the conservative values that created the GOP majority in the first place, the GOP will be a minority again like it was from the 30's to the 90's when it was run by the secular Rockefeller RINOs in the first place. That would be a HORRIBLE mistake and destroy the country. Most Republicans like the conservative GOP plank just the way it is, and will NOT sacrifice the soul of the party because of a warm and likeable RINO with a nice smile. It will NOT HAPPEN!
you make would awesome points
Thank you. This pharce is really annoying me.
lol
LOL! I must have missed something somewhere....what's a Pom??? :)
Rudy - Zell for '08!
That would be my honor if I ever did meet one. I would probably cry.
Only if you make me Secretary of Leisure.
You will end up with Hillary has POTUS...and this country will be socialist..
Is that what you want?
Me too Newts, Record is way better then Rudy's and he knows how to handle the Dems way better then Rudy ever thought of period.
[... McCain severely mentally affected by his imprisonment in Vietnam and still suffers it today...]
I call it POLITICIAN RETRIBUTION SYNDROME (PRS)
I happen to agree with you and have posted similar
comments. God bless McCain for the suffering he
endured. However I believe there is something called
POLITICIAN RETRIBUTION SYNDROME and it
has affected McCain and Ted Kennedy.
PRS causes people to enter politics in order to
inflict pain on the people they feel caused them
harm. Kennedy is getting even with America for
killing his brothers. McCain for the torture he
endured because of Johnson's (A Democrat) bungling
micro-management of the Vietnam War. Rant over.
Yes
Me too. The Clintons were toast - until that infamous *tic tic tic tic* 60 minutes interview. That's when they pulled off their biggest deception EVER (the Monica deception fell apart)...And Americans fell for it...rejecting a president (41) who had just led us in a successful campaign in Kuwait. That's the thanks he got.
