For the last few months, black politicians have worried that a crowded Democratic field of candidates would pave the way for a white city councilman, David Yassky, to take the central Brooklyn Congressional seat that has been held by black politicians dating back to Shirley Chisholm in the 1960s.
There was talk of pressuring one of the three black politicians to drop out of the race so the black vote would not be divided and pave the way for a Yassky victory. And there were calls for white politicians to urge Mr. Yassky to get out of the race so a black politician could take the seat, which has long been held by Representative Major Owens.
In recent days, however, a new dynamic has been emerging, as one of the three black candidates, City Councilwoman Yvette D. Clarke, has picked up some key endorsements that could give her the muscle to emerge as the Democratic candidate after the Sept. 12 primary.
Ms. Clarke received the endorsement yesterday of Congressman Anthony D. Weiner, who represents the adjacent district in Congress and who came in second in last years Democratic mayoral primary. And that followed by a day two significant endorsements from politically influential unions: 1199/S.E.I.U., the giant health care union, and Service Employees Local 32BJ, the large janitors union.
The other candidates in the race Mr. Yassky, State Senator Carl Andrews and Mr. Owenss son, Chris Owens have been trotting out endorsements in recent days as the campaign has intensified. While Mr. Yassky has been highlighting his support among blacks, Mr. Weiners endorsement of Ms. Clarke seemed directed at the largely white voters believed to form the core of Mr. Yasskys support. Mr. Weiner announced his backing outside Public School 321 in the heart of Park Slope, where he...

IIRC, Schumer was a mentor of Weiner and Yassky.
'Kay, New York Times : Could that be, err, racism?
who in their right mind would want to represent that District anyway?
And the powers-that-be, in the black community, try to tell us that blacks do not automatically support a black candidate in lock-step; yeah right!
Of course, not. Don't you know that racism is found only in Republican Party ?
could you imagine what would happen if a number of white candidates discussed a strategy to deny a black candidate
a chance to win an election?.....
no double standard here is there?
O, I think so. I have a feeling Dr. Rice's run would be the final nail in the coffin of the Democrat party. They'd disintegrate into the communists, and some weird 'independent/left of center' thing... Hello multi party system.
it doesn't matter who wins here-it will be a gun-grabbing left wing scumbag no matter what-yassky is probably worse than clarke if that @#$%&* schumer was his mentor
I doubt that you are familiar with the district. I live in the district, which includes one of the most beautiful and architecturally distinctive areas in the country, Brooklyn Heights.
Yassky is a liberal moron who was a vociferous promoter of the resolution to impeach President Bush in the City Council. As a registered Republican I can't vote in their primary, but if I could I would vote for Clarke.
Schumer will sit it out.
any district that's been represented by Major Owens for over a generation is not one I'd like to live in, native born New Yawker that I am. I know from Brooklyn, thank you very much.
If you know from Brooklyn, I'm surprised you are so disdainful of Brooklyn Heights.
Racism plain and simple.
