Best and worst commercials of the year
MSNBC ^ | Aug 22, 2006 | Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Posted on 08/22/2006 6:50:44 PM PDT by indcons

Only one commercial can top the sheer hatred our readers have for the winner of this year's worst-commercial contest. Yes, only creepy, toenail-snapping Digger the Dermatophyte is more hated than the horrendous repetition that is this year's winning loser, the HeadOn headache remedy commercial.

In case you haven't seen it (you can find it on YouTube, but really, why would you want to?), the commercial is as insanely simple as it is annoying. A female voice repeats "HeadOn: Apply directly to the forehead!" three times as a blissed-out smug woman rolls what appears to be a Bonne Bell LipSmacker on her head.

What in the name of a glue stick in disguise is going on there? First off, does anyone believe that this works any better than, say, rubbing your head with your hand? Who decided that a commercial where only the product name and tagline are repeated over and over was good advertising? What kind of drugs is the model in the ad actually on? And does anyone know anyone who has ever, ever used this product, or seen it for sale anywhere outside these ads?

I hate those ads, Progressive banking I think. Don't see them too much, late night mostly.

"What is the Head-On commercial about? I saw part of it once, and I was clueless... still am.

Don't worry if you missed it, it's clueless also.

Donna: Are those Cotton Dockers?

Jerry: Oh, I can't begin to tell you how much I hate that commercial.

Donna: Really? I like that commercial. (Jerry pauses)

Jerry: You like that commercial?

Donna: Yeah, it's clever.

Jerry: Now wait a second, you mean the one where the guys are all standing around, supposedly being very casual and witty?

Donna: Yeah, that's the one.

Jerry: What could you possibly like about that?

Donna: I don't know, I like the guys.

Jerry: Yeah, they're so funny and so comfortable with each other, and I could be comfortable too, if I had pants like that. I could sit on a porch and wrestle around, and maybe even be part of a real bull session.

Progressive Insurance is exactly that - an outfit that contributes heavily to liberal/far left causes.

"Progressive Corp.'s chairman is Peter Lewis, who gives more money to Democratic-leaning groups than any other person, according to the Center for Public Integrity."

I could tell the obese Scotsman is gluttonous and that it's an Austin Powers-style commercial. It's simply not funny and the Scotsman's chin drool is disgusting.

Isn't "progressive" like the word "liberal" in that it is very old word and many different idealogies can fit under it, but the left and far left has usurped it for itself?

My mom hates the Sonic commercials, but I think most of them are quite funny.

I am not sure about the origins of the word. At present, the far left maniacs have decided to use it as a synonym for "liberal."

A liberal by any other name is just as perverted and crooked (apologies to William Shakespeare Esq.)

For the sake of truth in advertising, "Truth" ads should come with the label "Fascist Orwellian Group Think in Progress."

I don't smoke, but if I ever saw those losers, I'll friggin buy a pack.

I've always heard it as used to meaning a bir further left then progressive. While not all liberals IMO are pinkos, I think all progressives can be.

Geico's earlier ad campaign was classic; it was funny and memorable and sold the product. The new campaign, on the other hand, is just stupid and annoying.

My favorite commercial this year is probably the Pet Smart; we just got a new puppy so it appeals to me as a pet owner. However, while the Bobo commercial is cute, there's no real groundbreaking campaigns this year.

The Head On Commercial also drives me nutty (not that I have far to go...) and makes me never want to buy that stuff. Arghhh.

I can only imagine that the Head On product would make your forhead breakout. Which only makes me imagine what the FreeDhem hemerroid cream would do....and by the way...is that one a roll on too? You dont see them applying it in the ads.
